Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hello. I notice that lots of people simply have the mods4car on their car, which is a great unit. But I'm curious if anyone has actually installed an aftermarket alarm? To be quite honest, I don't think most (audible) alarms are effective. I've seen it so many times where an alarm goes off and no one pays attention. I'm more concerned about locking down the system and warning possible theives that it's got an alarm (blinking LED or something). So, I was looking at brands like Clifford which has a two way pager type alarm. I should also say, I'm very interested in the mods4car system, but I am very worried I'm going to fry the car when I mistakenly cross wires or something With that, anyone installed aftermarket alarms? Thanks

POST 2Original post

I dont think you can "fry" your car by installing the mods4cars unit. That being said, I did temorarily "break" my car when I tried installing mine. But everything went back to normal when I took it out. Not sure what I did wrong. The Cayman does come with an alarm. The steering wheel locks when the key is removed, there is a blinking LED and there is even interior radar. I do not think the car can be started at all without the key. Now I am sure there will always be someone who can defeat any alarm, but there is only so much you can do short of hiring an armed guard to be on duty 24 hours a day.

POST 3Original post

The "standard" alarm for all Cayman/ Boxster includes a rolling keycode in the key head, an interior microwve sensor, sensors on the front and rear trunks plus the glove box. There is also the usual dual circuit immobiliser and steering wheel lock. Trying to fit an aftermarket alarm is going to be difficult as the Porsche system cannot be switched off and can conflict with the aftermarket unit. If you are looking for additional security , one option is to fit the additional options offered by Porsche for certain countries. The options consist of a tilt sensor which senses if the car is being jacked up to remove a wheel or being towed away, and also a battery backed siren which will continue to sound even if the battery is disconnected. Porsche do not fit the looms for these options as standard so you will need both the wiring and the parts. Having retro fitted these OEM options to my LHD 987 , I can confirm a retro fit is possible by the home DIY enthusiast. You will require the rear control unit re coding to allow the devices to be activated. Contact me if you want any more details.
