appart from the cig lighter (which porsche don't recommend we use as a power source except for the elec. pump), cayman comes with two power outlets.
What are they used for ? could i use standard appliance, Eg a laptop. I remeber the voltage in the owners manual saids 12V.
You can power most things that require 12V DC power. Home appliances that plug in to the wall need 120V AC. You can get converters to change from DC to AC and you can power a laptop charger.
thats good to hear, a laptop would be useful in the car.
I've never seen anything that uses 12V DC power source. what are some example items i could use ?
cell phone
Which outlet do I use for my cell phone?
the owners manual didn't give a specific range, but i suppose you can't really draw more than the car offers and it'll just blow the fuse.
Whichever one you want - but I'd use the one easiest to get to, since the oputlets remain active even after you shut off the engine and remove the key, so you want to unplug anythng plugged in to avoid discharging your battery unexpectedly quickly.
The fuse should blow before you damage anything else. I don't know how the car's electronics are designed, but I would guess (hope??) they've got some other protection in there against drawing too much current - OCP using a foldback limiter, perhaps. Yes, there is a physical limit to how much current you can draw but I would guess if you tried that you'd fry some electronics before you hit that absolute limit.
in the owners manual, they discourage using the cig lighter as a power source, which means the cig lighter doesn't have the level of protection the that power outlets have.
But since most appliances have a cig lighter adapter, i'd like to know what kind of things runs on 12V DC and have the 3 prong power plug...
or this is just a german thing, and not really useful outside german.
This is a good question. I have been plugging my GPS into the cig lighter rather then the one down by the passenger footwell. I hope i'm okay doing that??? If I remember correctly when I got delivery the service manager told me to make sure I plug the tire pump (for a flat) into the footwell for power and not the cig. lighter. So far my GPS did not blow anything by using the cig lighter outlet. What outlet does everyone else plug their portable GPS into?
The passenger footwell for me if the radar detector is plugged into the console socket. If not into that one. The manual is helpful here by the way.
