Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Similar thing on the safety front that you see now on Mercs is that when youre actually driving and use the turn signals the relevant front fog light will come on too to create the maximum amount of notice for everyone that youre turning a corner.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

This has happened 2x for no apparent reason.
When I exit the car the display reads "parking lights on".
Of course I did not turn any lights on but check anyway to be sure.
I go outside and find one (1) rear parking light lens on
I would have to restart the car and turn it off again for it to go away.
Has anyone experienced this or is it just a glitch?
Make sure your turn signal stalk hasn't been left in the up or down position when you shut the car down. This will cause one light to stay on, it's a "feature".
Nice to see another local owner on board here!
Pistolpete got it right. You might also want to read other tips at
http://www.planet-9.com/cayman-complaints/6951-didnt-read-manual-read.html
or even the Owner's Manual its own self.
Apparently in Europe it is common (or perhaps required ?) to leave your street-side parking light on when you park on the street - I presume so that other cars don't run into you in the dark.
Maybe one of our friends from across the pond can confirm this?
Pistolpete's got it right. But it is really, really maddening when it happens to you the first time........
I kinda wish they could hardwire the manual into me like in
The Matrix
. Then I wouldn't get so frustrated.
Have owned at least six cars with this feature; all French and German. Apparently its not an English or Italian thing. Since everyone with a
Cayman
also owns, it seems, a
BMW
am surprised the feature is not wider known. Our 2000
BMW
has it too. However on my fifties/sixties cars, the one side parking lights were actually dedicated bulbs, front and rear, of very low wattage so they could be left on overnight. On the
Cayman
it just seems to be the regular parking and taillights which I would be afraid to leave on all night due to current drain.
I have owned 8
BMW
's and never notice this feature. But the first time I took my
Cayman
to the track, I was coasting to a stop in the paddock and turned off the key while I was rolling and turning into my parking spot. I noticed one fog light on and thought I must have fried something on my new car. Then the problem went away. I finally re-read that post and realized that my fog lights actually double as parking lights and the turn signal activates one-side. Quite stange to me after 10 years of driving German cars.
yup...pretty much every car here in europe has this feature.....very useful if you park in a narrow street just round a corner and want to make sure youre able to let other drivers see your parked car in time. I personally have only used this feature about 5 times in the last 10 years but each time it did help me out in terms of feeling comfortable about leaving my car parked where I did vs driving around for 30 mins trying to find another parking space. Similar thing on the safety front that you see now on Mercs is that when youre actually driving and use the turn signals the relevant front fog light will come on too to create the maximum amount of notice for everyone that youre turning a corner.
Like HBFC said, it is a common feature on European cars . . . especially German cars. My Mercedes does the same thing.
Another common feature is two front fog lights and one rear fog light. It makes you feel better when you are driving down a overcast autobahn.
Very interesting. My 1973 914 does the same thing!
The first time I noticed one side light was still on I also thought something had fried!
Didn't solve the puzzle until I started the engine again.
Envirospace----Cool, you're right, the functionality is satisfying. But be prepared for people knocking on the door all evening saying "there's a car out here with its lights on"!
I parked my car outside a restaurant last night and left my parking light on.. I go out to see an old VW Polo parked right behind me with its front plate in contact with my rear bumper! My heart stopped and i quickly moved my car away; thank God my bumper's fine! I never found the idiot though...
Anyways, could the parking light have been a disaster magnet?
Since this thread has begun, has anyone left their parking light on overnight? I'd be curious to see if they could start their car in the morning.
Also, it occurs to me that were I to use it in a place like Manhattan, I'd possibly irritate many of my fellow "parkers": excited to see a (very in demand) potential space (as indicated by the light on ... foot on the brake?... about to pull out??) then disappointed to find an empty car.
