The rear pads on my 996 targa need replacing and so I took it to a garage for a quote where they recommended disc replacement also.

In the USA the garages would typcially reove this lip a couple of times and only recommend disk replacement when the thickness had been reduced too much (this was on my SUV), has anyone else had this lip removed and saved on cost of disk replacement?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The rear pads on my 996 targa need replacing and so I took it to a garage for a quote where they recommended disc replacement also. The reason for this was that there is a lip or ridge at the disc circumference. In the USA the garages would typcially reove this lip a couple of times and only recommend disk replacement when the thickness had been reduced too much (this was on my SUV), has anyone else had this lip removed and saved on cost of disk replacement?

POST 2Original post

Yes, this is known as skimming the discs and I had it done on my Racing Puma on which the discs were pricey. On most everyday cars it's cheaper to replace them. The manufacturer will have a tolerance that it is unwise to go below for disc thickness and so the garage should measure the disc in a few places with a micrometer for an accurate assessment In the days of asbestos pads disc replacement was unusual. Now with safer materials used the downside is disc wear.

POST 3Original post

Porsche allow 2mm of disc wear (1mm each side), so find out what a new one is and what yours actually measure and Bobs your Uncle.

POST 4Original post

This was posted by Richard H recently, very useful. Also remember the wear rate increases as the disks get worn.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the replies. As an engineer I find it really hard to believe that just 1mm of wear per side is the max allowed, from a structural point of view this level of wear should not affect the disk,,

POST 6Original post

I'm not sure what the thickness of the standard discs are on my 997 which would be interesting to find out as I have a report from an OPC which gives the minimum requirement before they are changed. IIRC though the fronts are 34mm and the rears are 28mm. If that is the case then the previous comment by neil_c would appear to be true.
