Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

If its very cold, I open the door and the window doesn't drop, which means i cant then close it again until its thawed a bit. Other than tipping warm water all over the window seal etc has anyone got any tips on how to prevent this? My car sits outside on the drive so its a common issue!

POST 2Original post

I'm thinking of rubbing a little silicon grease into the door seal rubber as I have the same problem and also pour warm water over the doors. I have been nicking the missus' grand vitara in this snow though :thumb: TB

POST 5Original post

Warm water (not too hot) does the trick as does the above mentioned silicone grease although you will have to put up with a greasey window. The key is to keep the glass very clean, I use Autoglym glass cleaner inside and out. Don't forget the window regulators on 996 / 986 models are very weak, a little more strain and the cable will stretch or worse snap. When thawed how do the windows perform? Slow or normal?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

have to confess i havent tried the windows once they've thawed. If its cold I leave them well alone! However, they do drop at the usual pace when I open and close the door.

POST 7Original post

Lloyd Do I take it that slow = preparing to self-destruct? My passenger window is definitely slower than the driver's side.
POST 8Original post
Afraid it could, they should both be the same. Slow normally means it either needs adjusting is required (this is so difficult) or the cable has stretched. To check for cable slack is easy, simply drop window half-way, firmly hold the front and the most rear of the window and rock as much as you can (without too much force... just checking for slack here) the glass clockwise / anti-clockwise, compare theis to the drivers side which is working well, that should be a good guide. If similar tension then it maybe out of correct setting. It could have one side of the rail back more than the other causing the glass to almost twist when dropping or it could be out as in the rear or front part of the glass is dropping just before the other (should both be the same time) causing the glass to form a slight rhombus shape which of course widens the glass causing extra friction on the rails. The adjustment for this is at the underside of the door, you will see one for the rake (how much the glass leans into the car or presses against the seals when shut) or front & rear cable tensioners (these are just fine tuning, the door trim needs to come off for large adjustments.

POST 9Original post

Excellent advice cheers Lloyd. I'll check this out. You may have just helped me out on another issue too - I get a very slight (and therefore infuriating) wind whistle at 70+ from the top of the driver's window when closed. Sounds like the rake adjustment you mentioned could help out here.
