Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause
1
0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: '3rd raditor bit' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is '3rd raditor bit' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check engine bay' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I didn't think any of the 3.6 X51s were fitted with the centre radiator - only the 3.4s.

The following parts in the engine are replaced, exchanged or modified to achieve this increased performance:

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks,
This is my first post and its just a question about a 996 C4s I'm thinking of purchasing, the guys selling it said had a X51 power upgrade and the sticker under the bonnet confirms this but I noticed there is no 3rd radaitor. from all I could find on here about this option it seems this is standard part so whats going on?
As the C4S has the Turbo front PU and radiators (don't worry, you'll know this is true the first time OPC present the bill for corrosion/stone-chip damage :wink: ) - the cooling is already deemed "adequate" (to quote another well known car marque).
You need to check the engine bay:
Look above and behind throttle body (under rear window area) - the intake plenum and manifolds are cast aluminum alloy (rather than black plastic - see below).
In the exploded diagram below:
7 Modified oil pan partition box (larger alloy baffles with aperture valving replaces small plastic baffles)
8 Uprated exhaust gasket for larger exhaust ducts
9 Adapted exhaust manifolds with larger cross-section and optimized flow behavior
10 Alternative suction line on AC compressor (modified for space reasons)
11 Optimized inlet and exhaust ducts (machined and polished)
12 Modified intake system (modified cross-section - material: sand cast aluminium)
NOT SHOWN:
Revised cylinder heads
New 996 mark 1.1 piston set (3.4 only)
Modified valves (including profile and longer shaft)
Larger lift camshaft
Additional dual chamber oil extraction pump
Additional oil extraction pipe (to service cylinders 4-6)
Additional third radiator (excl. C4S)
Alternate Tri-metallic catalytic converter
New shields for new oil suction pipe
New underside panel in transmission area
Modified fuel maps for DME
thanks for the quick response guys, I did have a look at the manifolds and from my untrained eye I thought they were cast aluminum alloy. It was the 3rd raditor bit that was throwing me. :thumb:
I didn't think any of the 3.6 X51s were fitted with the centre radiator - only the 3.4s. The parts lists for the retrofit X51 kits show the radiator for the 3.4 but not the 3.6. Maybe it was different if they were factory fitted....
Richard,
I was under that impression until a scandinavian member PM'd me about his third rad'd 3.6.
And no, it wasn't a Tip.
On further research (renntech) it turns out all 996 X51 (3.4 and 3.6) require a third rad, except C4S due to that model's larger Turbo equivalent apertures and rads.
I wonder if the "under-spec'd" C4S X51 option had a pro rata discount?
I should have known - you are absolutely correct. If you ever do Mastermind, X51 could be your specialist subject! :thumb:
I just looked at the X51 TSB for the 3.6 and it says:
A parts set –"Carrera Powerkit"– is available to retrofit the standard engine with an increased performance of 254 kW (345 HP). The following parts in the engine are replaced, exchanged or modified to achieve this increased performance:
– new intake manifold with modified cross-section (material: sand cast aluminium );
– new intake pipe supports adapted to the form of the intake manifold;
– new exhaust manifolds with larger cross-section and optimized flow behavior;
– new cylinder heads with optimized, CNC-milled inlet ducts;
– new camshafts with larger valve stroke on the inlet side and modified inlet and outlet timing;
– inlet valve springs adapted to the enlarged valve stroke;
– modified partition box in the oil pan;
– modified maps for the DME control module.
The following steps are also taken on the vehicle:
– new underside panel in the transmission area;
–
additional radiator in connection with modified front spoiler, except on the 911 Carrera 4S (996).
The higher-performance engine is also available as an option when ordering a new vehicles – 911 Carrera / 911 Carrera 4 / 911 Carrera 4S / 911 Targa – under Exclusive Option X51.
