I have also changed the oil twice, did the 30k maintenance myself and put on a set of rear tires.

I have replaced the switch for the reverse lights, cost about $15 and 10 minutes of my time.

Just the usual - check for proper maintenance history, no wrecks, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was ready to buy a new car and a friend said he is willing to part with his wifes '99 Cabriolet(she tends to drive thier Land Rover).
I have never owned a Porsche but something tells me it would be great to drive one. Are there any known issues that I should look for?
Is this the first step to a bad addiction?
Is there a better forum for this question?
Thanks,
Slider
Hey Slider, the 99 CAB is a 996 model and if you post this over in that forum you will get some responses. But I suggest you do a search FIRST or you will get lambasted for not doing that and just reading up on it.
Here is the link for the 996 fourm:

I bought a 99 cab about 3 years ago. It had 24k on it at the time and I have put about 24k on it over the last 3 years. I have replaced the switch for the reverse lights, cost about $15 and 10 minutes of my time. No other problems (knock on wood!) Now comes the expensive part. Shift kit, PSE, guage rings, aluminum pedals, bluetooth phone kit, and the list goes on! This has been the most fun I have had in a long time. My car had pretty much every option along with upgraded wheels. I would make sure you are familiar with the options available and find one that has them. I wanted 18" wheels, full leather, heated seats, HiFi audio system, sport seats, litronic lights. Mine also had parking sensors which I have liked as well as the hard top. I have also changed the oil twice, did the 30k maintenance myself and put on a set of rear tires. It had new tires when I bought it and it is getting close to needing new rears again, the front still looks fine. The hard top squeaks a bit over large bumps, with the soft top there is not one rattle in the car. Inside still looks brand new, exterior has a few rock chips in the hood otherwise it also looks pretty much new. A 99 is hard to beat for the money!
I would not worry about the reliability issues you sometimes hear people talk about. Most any car can have problems, but not any car is as much fun to driven as a Porsche.

Bought my P 996 cab/tip 99 over a year ago (almost 14K added to the 55K when I bought it = almost 69K miles)
spend a lot of money on the P....it was a dissaster!!! converted front into a +02, (fenders, lights bumpers), CF doorsils, New 3 spoke steering wheel, floor mats, etc etc.....
Sorry these are mods,
on maintenance I spend a little over 1,000 (60K miles service 850 and a oil change at 67.5K for about 200 bucks)
Oh and an coolant flush because the coolant cap started leaking (cap was about 17 bucks and the coollant and labor abotu 150 bucks.
All and all (knock on wood!!) I have been pretty lucky with my P, besides that my 3rd party warranty provider got liquidated and screwed my out of 2K
Looking back I would have purchased a 02, just because I like that model better and the conversion is pretty expensive!
