Just wondering if anyone has considered a nitrous install on their
Cayman
.
It would seem to be a good candidate to me, you don't need space to install a nitrous kit and a responsible kit would operate in the same range of engine stresses as something like a supercharger kit. Or even cause less stress.
Especially good since a VERY high end nitrous kit is going to cost a lot less than a supercharger for the
Cayman
(and there aren't many superchargers or turbo kits available yet). And deliver similar performance (only on those rare occasions when you don't want to be shown up in a straight line).
It can be very stealth too, nobody needs to know you even have it. You can drive normally 99% of the time but then that one time when someone pulls up
next
to you at a stoplight, you can give them a little surprise.
I guess you've never had a nitrous kit before so I will lay it out for you.
1. Nitrous kit cheaper than a supercharger/turbocharger kit? Yes, but constant refills will eventually drive up your total cost over time. You're better off with a supercharger/turbocharger/engine drop in.
2. Minimal space to install kit. Wrong! Regular nitrous kit bottles will take up about 1/4 of your rear trunk space or half of your front trunk space (not ideal since you will need to run longer lines), unless you use the smaller bottles, but you will need more than 1 bottle to get desired effects, which will then take up more space. You also have to drill it in place to keep it from moving around. Do you really want to drill into your car's body?
3. If you try engaging your nitrous (say a 50-shot nozzle is installed) in first gear, YOU WILL SPIN IN PLACE. I had a 50-shot installed on my old Eclipse and took it to the drag strip. I spun in place in first gear and locked up my wheels. I looked like an idiot.
4. Honestly, a 50-shot is something you will not notice. If you really want to feel a freak of speed, you need a 100 or 150-shot but then you are really stressing your engine, quite possibly blowing it up.
5. Nitrous is a good supplement to a super/turbocharger, but by itself it doesn't make sense really.
1. If you don't use it a lot I don't think filling the bottle will cost that much.
2. I meant minimal space in the engine bay since its a bit cramped in a mid-engine car. Trunk space: who cares. Whats the problem with drilling? I have drilled into all of my cars for various mods?
3. Yes I know? 3rd gear is the money for nitrous. Why would you use it in 1st?
4. You can tune the size of the nitrous shot to make however much hp you want. Its funny people on here say they notice 6hp from an intake but you don't notice a 50 shot of nitrous? Statement: If a supercharger can add 100hp safely over years, nitrous can add 75hp safely once and a while.
5. I think its going to deliver a lot more satisfaction than most of the mods people on this forum do, exclusive of turbocharger or superchargers (which nobody really has yet).
1. I think you'll find that once you have nitrous, you will end up using it much more than you think. I sure did! I got sick of always going to the store to refill the bottle so I bought a turbo kit for my Eclipse and sold the nitrous kit to some kid wanting boost but couldn't afford a turbo upgrade.
2. Sure, who cares about trunk space? When they installed the nitrous kit in my car I said I didn't care about space. I was wrong. I needed it. I just wasn't thinking ahead.
3. I've tried using nitrous in third gear at the drag strip. Doesn't work. By the time the nitrous hit, I was almost at the end and whatever boost it added didn't add much. I had my best times engaging the nitrous just after I made a good launch in first. Just don't hit it before you launch. Maybe on a highway, yeah sure, but then you're asking for trouble and it could very well be an accident waiting to happen. Stoplight to stoplight on the other hand, you might hit the
next
light before you hit third and lets not forget other vehicles and traffic.
4. I
when people say they notice a 6 hp difference. I didn't notice a SIGNIFICANT change when engaging a 50-shot. I knew the car was going faster, but it wasn't like woah crap! If you really want to feel something, try a 150-shot.
5. I think most of the people on this forum care a lot about how the car drives and feels more so than speed. I'm very happy with my
Cayman
and speed isn't a big thing for me in it. If I feel like ripping a hole in the fabric of space, I have a supercharged
M3
just waiting for me to fire it up!
