Problem is my installer said that while installing the B&M kit, he had to cut plastic bushing clips and remove the plastic bushings.

I just installed the OEM SSK and have little use for the original shifter.

I know this late to the party but for those looking in the future...if the Cayman is like the 986/996 and the B&M kit is like the kit that comes for the 987/996 the procedure is reversable but you will have to use the aluminum bushings that come with the B&M on the stock shifter, which is not a problem.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
I installed the B&M SSK and the result is horrible. I do not want to go into details now as it is really moot at this point. I just want to return to OEM.
Problem is my installer said that while installing the B&M kit, he had to cut plastic bushing clips and remove the plastic bushings. The B&M kit comes with aluminum parts for reassembly. (B&M instructions steps 23 through 25)
Now to go back to OEM, I need new plastic bushings. The dealer says that they do sell the bushings separately, but I can buy the shifter assembly for $245.
Has anyone on this board went from B&M back to OEM? If so, how do you solve the plastic bushing delimma. Your education is much appreciated.
CP
Oh, sorry - to actually be helpful... I installed the B&M myself - I would be certain that yes, you need new bushings. No way to get them out without cutting. No idea how you're going to get the B&M ones out either - they go in tight (with a mallet - no using a mallet to get them out).
I think your best bet is to get the stock assembly for 245.
The B&M installation is not reversible. Where are you located? I wouldn't mind trading out shifter cages, I have the stock shifter
. I'd front the shipping if need be.

Suneet,
I am in California, close to San Jose.
But how can you remove OEM shifter cage without cutting the bushing clips? Once you clipped that, the unit is kaput, no?
If it works, I'll trade you straight out with my B&M.
CP
I would be willing to sell you my stock shifter. I just installed the OEM SSK and have little use for the original shifter.
Send me a PM if you are interested.
Erik
CP, the bushings are in the cage, I'm in FL so we'll have to ship. The cage is the entire shifter assembly that is held in by four bolts and has to be modified for the B&M. Edo might give you a good deal on his stock shifter... otherwise I'm willing to do it. Send me a pm.

I am in the SF East Bay and have a 2006 997 shifter complete, that I purchased on Ebay. It is the same one in the Cayman. I was going to get a Schnell shifter to put in it and save a couple hundred bucks. But I am going to stay stock.
So, if you can use it for your car, just send me a PM and we can get together. It'll cost you a beer.
Mr. Marshall,
You have a PM.
Dan,
The B&M went in and when in neutral, it feels like sitting in a wad of gum. It does not wriggle freely and stays at whatever position I shift out from. I trust my installer as he has done many of these, and spent an hour working with the adjustment nut, to no avail. This is the best he could do.
I took it into another shop that Eric from bumperplugs recommended, and they agree that it is absolutely abnormal. I do not want to spend a bunch of money install /uninstall shifters to get it right, so I am going back to stock. At least if that acts up, I can go back to the dealers.
More complication is that my car came with a bum tranny. The symptom was the shifter acted very weird in neutral. Porsche replaced the tranny in the first week. I don't want a B&M shifter muddying the water in case the second tranny is acting up. If or when I go into the dealer complaining about the tranny, I want an OEM shifter there.
It is a remote possibility that I have 2 blown trannies in a row (same symptoms), but I hate to eat a $5k tranny for a $300 SSK.
So now you know the rest of the story.
One word of advice for others considering a SSK. You need to destroy the OEM shifter assembly (the bushing clips specifically) to get the stock unit out. If for some reason you want to return to stock, you pay for a whole assembly (they do not sell the bushings separately). That's a $166 part by itself. I am paying my tuitions along the way.

Sorry to hear the depressing details. Your problem definitely sounds bizarre & seems like it's either an installation or a manufacturing problem. You appear to have ruled out instalation. Is B&M not willing to stand behind its product or is it just too much of a pita?
Your experience may be a good reason for others to spend a few bucks more to buy Porsche's SSK & perhaps have the dealer install it. At least then it's covered by Porsche's warranty. Food for thought.
Dan,
Eric of Bumperplug is a stand-up guy and will stand behind his product. So I am ok with that. In any case, I will be out the labor cost of the initial B&M install, the OEM re-install, or even the shifter assembly parts cost.
Fortunately, for the generosity of Mr. Frank Marshall on this board, I have a free part. It will be a $400 lesson when it's all said and done.
I am actually thinking of having a dealer install the TechQuipment SSK. It is not cheap, but as you said, peace of mind.
Lucky I bought my car cheap.

The bushings will not effect the feel of the stock shifter or the shifting pattern, smoothness or length of the throws. The down side is the remaining B&M shfter is worthless because B&M doesn't sell the bushings separate either, but at least you have the stock feel back.
