Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

10 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello, Does anyone has any views on whether it's possible / how easy it is to retrofit Power Assisted Steering on a 996 Targa? Would assume question refers to all 996s in general (with the possible exception of a C4S, don't know) Cheers

POST 2Original post

Is this a genuine post? Giving it the benefit of the doubt, all 996 come with power steering, so doesn't need retro-fitting. Maybe it's faulty? Can I presume you mean PSM or PASM? In which case, not really. Stability management is standard on all 4wd cars and optional on all 2wd cars. The special 40th edition might be different, not sure. You could retrofit it but it would be very expensive. Some people are happy without traction control, others prefer it.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

It is a genuine post, in which case pls bear with my (genuine) ignorance In the 996 option codes (attached), I see: "M657 POWER ASSISTED STEERING" And in the service book on the sticker listing all the options I don't see that one. Therefore is it fair do desume it is not present and is optional? Cheers

POST 4Original post

Don't worry, you have power steering. The "M" codes only specify optional or non-standard spec alterations (not base spec). The "M" codes date from 1973 and were added to over time until 2004 when enough was enough (perhaps someone asked the factory where their PAS was!), and they were rationalised as new "I" codes. There are several clues to PAS: whining on full lock (or under load), the ability to actually turn the wheel whilst stationary (AVOID - else eventually you will have no PAS!), the PAS fluid reservoir (right of throttle body in engine bay) - look for filler cap bearing "PENTOSIN CHF 11S", the fact your model spec is lacking code "M656" = NO PAS! The filler cap is beyond the MAF arrowed in this image (it's good to recycle!)

POST 6Original post

As GT4 says, I think you have to consider the list more as manufacturing codes than user-specified option codes. Here are the build codes for my car, and you can see 657, which doesn't appear on the VIL. (Hopefully this will be big enough to see)

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Rich - how/where from did you get that list? NB: Can see you now have exactly 996 posts on the forum...maybe your lucky day?

POST 9Original post

RICHARD - STOP! Don't drive anywhere until you have contacted your OPC. From your line spec it looks like there was a misbuild on your car. It looks to me, from the model designation, that Stuttgart only fitted one bank of turbos on your 996TT.

POST 10Original post

How you cannot know whether you have/have not got power steering is bazaar! :dont know: Now if you had a 993 you may indeed question it - given that it takes more force than a normal car and unless you have hands like an East German Shot Putter forget the one finger approach! I can apply the same logic with assisted brakes - again they work but some force is required. Getting into a 'normal' car after driving a 993 is somewhat entertaining - steering feels you are driving on ice and you need to be careful you don't headbutt the windscreen when you first dab the brakes!

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
