Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion · Original poster

It doesn't disappear or change noise on braking or raising the handbrake whilst driving, so don't think it's the brakes at all, do you think it sounds like a wheel bearing?

Singing wheels....bearings?

Suggestion · Original poster

yeah, I did wonder about a stone or something but thought that would change noise under braking, but like you say if it's caught in between the backplate, that does sound about right, I'll check it tomorrow and see if I can find anything.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, coming home last night and started to hear a metallic singing/skimming noise coming from n/s/r. It doesn't disappear or change noise on braking or raising the handbrake whilst driving, so don't think it's the brakes at all, do you think it sounds like a wheel bearing? If so any idea on cost? Do both sides need doing at once? Is it diy or specialist? thanks Steve

POST 2Original post

It could be a small stone caught between the disk and the caliper or the backplate. I've had this on my 996 and another car. Quite a loud noise. Worth checking out.

POST 4Original post

It does sound like a stone stuck, but when I had one caught it was a very high pitch noise. When the brakes a cold tomorrow, it will hopefully clear itself quite quickly. I haven't read of anyone with wheel bearing problems previously, but that's not to sya they don't exist.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

must have been a stone, stopped 1/2 way through today, took about 25 miles to lose it though, with very embarrassing noises whilst driving through Haywards Heath! Glad it's not the bearings just before xmas!
