Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi All: I have an 08 Cayman with about 6500 on it. Love this thing! My car has been back to dealer now on it's 3rd trip trying to figure out 2 noises in the rear. The first is seemingly simple. It's just a rumble/rattle over even small bumps. Dealer has replaced the vibration damper in the lid. He said it was broken in pieces. That seemed to help for about 2 days. You can even hear it when you close the door! Something loose in the interior trim I guess. The second noise is very intermittant and I've never heard a car make this noise. It sounds like a horrible screech of grinding, ripping metal and it sounds rotaional. This is very load and will last for several seconds in the forward gears, any speed, any time. It also happens in reverse but is more tied to speed of the car. Dealer has it today and has not heard it but thinks it may be the E brake drum. I know these are very specific issues but I thought someone out there may have had these noises too. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Just a thought for consideration: I have had stones catch in my rear brakes three times, once in my Boxster and twice in the CS. I've been successful in getting rid of them each time by driving backwards until it catches and spits the stone out. Each time happened when I was going slowly in a gravel strewn area (maybe 5 mph or so). The sound you describe is what this sounded like. The first time it happened it took me about 10 minutes to figure out what was going on and getting underneath the car. The second time it happened it took me about 10 seconds to figure it out and by the third time I just stopped, backed up and then went forward again. If it is a stone it could really be caught in there by now. Hope this helps.

POST 3Original post

The stone in the wheel deal happened to me in my old Boxster as well. It was weird, it would only happen if I turned a hard right. It lasted for two days over a weekend. I figured time for the dealer. That Sunday evening I went up a curb and I heard a pop a saw a stone shoot out in the street! Problem solved!!

POST 4Original post

Hey Guys,Thanks! It was a stone just as you suggested. My dealer pulled it out and it was quite worn down on one side. It's a stone from my Mom's driveway which was exactly when I first heard it after leaving her house. The rear rattle in the trunk area was a loose latch that was fixed as well. Cheers!

Like the man said - this site is amazing. You couldn't make this stuff this up and the fact that it has happened to several people makes it more amazing.

POST 7Original post

Hi I have a 06CS, I also get the rumble you have described. It sounds like subwoofer and is worse when going over bumps and when windows are up. I took it to my local dealer today and they seem to think it's due to rear hatch moving and hence moving air inside the cabin like piston. So they are going to add some weight to rear hatch lid (to make it heavy). I'll let you know how it goes

POST 8Original post

Arch7 - sounds like what some describe as trunk "boom". I had this and tightening the hatch latch (basically pulling the hatch down a little tighter) and cured it.
