Suggestion

After escalating to Porsche, the dealership brought the car in at the beginning of the week to run a full diagnostic "20 page" check on my car and I'm now told that they have found an issue with the "air gap between the Camshaft on banks 1 & 2." Makes no sense to me but has come from the Master technician via the Service Desk so I will speak to the tech tomorrow to hopefully find out what this means.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Hi, I wanted to start a new thread based on the above issue which I've had since buying the car used with 7K miles on the clock. I sometimes experience a strange engine noise when turning the key. It's almost a mechanical clunk, like something has actuated. I then find that the engine turns over but does not spring into life, sometimes for as long as 10 min! When it does it is sometimes accompanied by a louder mechanical clunk or an exhaust backfire. This has happened about 10 times and I can find no correlation or root cause. To cut a long story short. The car had been to the dealer about 7 times to no avail. It has had a new fuel pump and crankshaft sensor but after a brief hiatus the issue has re-surfaced. The tech also mentioned that he started the car more than a dozen times and on one occasion the engine sounded like it started on 3 cylinders. There are no fault codes present in the DME. I will update this thread with the outcome in case anyone else has this issue but if someone can shed some light in the interim that would be well received. Many thanks Chris

POST 2Original post

Sounds like there is nothing wrong with the car. You are just imagining things to be a problem when everything you see/hear is "normal" with the car. This is what my dealer tells me regarding the oil smoke/burn issue and so many other things because it is a Porsche... Good luck with whatever goes on with the car, I hope they are able to fix it for you!

POST 3Original post

This actually happened to me once on the first day of getting my car. Ever since, this hasn't happened again. When it happened that time, I turned the key on and off several times and engine made this weird sound...dind't start fully. Had to rest for 15 min and came back out to the garage and it started to work fine ever since. I thought I was going crazy...or got a bug on a brand new car.

POST 4Original post

Exactly - it's almost like you advance the camshaft slightly and the car needs to rotate it a number of times to "sense" where it is again. Letting the car rest does seem to let it "reset" and it will start again. However, if you continue to try to turn it over you can be there for minutes. Crazy!

POST 5Original post

My CS has only 4K on the clock (bought new), I think I experienced something in one occasion,if not similar at least an "odd" start. It was on a day in which I had to stop 2 times in a short space, when I started the car it made a rather different noise and started with a sort of metallic "clunck", different than usual, including the starter engine noise. I atributed it to starting a hot engine, since then no further "odd" starts. Good luck with your quest, this hard to get faults are a PITA to deal with.

POST 6Original post

I think this is a problem that someone needs to look at or explain further. Experienced it once. The car sort of had a mis-start and then would not start on second try. We left it and then it was OK after 1 hour. LOL!

POST 7Original post

Our Cayman has a 5spd. We've experienced this a couple times. We found that if you turn the key all the way counter-clockwise [ left ] and count to 5, then off for a couple seconds then it starts up fine. You also have to do this is you kill the engine with bad clutch work. It seems to reset a lot of stuff. HTH
