Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Planet-9: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1Original post

I have almost 2000 miles on my car now and when i turn off the engine, there is quite a bit of snap, crackle, pop coming from the exhaust area along with a "smell". How do you know if you are having a problem with the catalytic converters? Seems like there are a few that have had them replaced. This of course, could just be the result of "suggestive" reading by browsing the forums too much and the car is just fine. Or maybe not. J

POST 2Original post

J - Your car is probably just fine - the exhaust systems on Porsches, along with all the metal air deflectors (more of those on earlier air-cooled cars) all get quite hot and all the noise is quite common. The smell is the cosmoline they put on the car to protect it from the salt air on the trip over from Finland burning off, which will take time. I still smell it some and have 18k miles on my car. If there's trouble with your cats, you'll get a computer error showing up on your dash a long time before your human nose will detect that there's anything amiss. brad

POST 3Original post

Brad is right on. That is a common noise to Porsches and the smell will go away after some miles (there have been several topics on this so a few others have had the same question). It isn't a complaint but one of the lovely Porsche noises.

POST 4Original post

Thanks for the headsup on this! I'll stop worrying about it since everything seems to be running great with no problems. J

POST 5Original post

My cats just went out after 3300 miles. They must be replaced per dealer!

POST 6Original post

That may be the case, but it has nothing to do with the smell of burning cosmoline. There's been quite a few documented cases of Cayman cats having to be replaced. brad

POST 7Original post

If you think your CS crackles and pops as the exhaust cools, you should listen to a Harley! All the heat shields are directly attached to the exhaust pipes, and it sounds like a percussion symphony as it cools.

POST 8Original post

Can you point me to the sources that refer to many cat replacements. Is this at the PCA site. I am not able to locate much on cats at this site.

POST 9Original post

2006 with 9900 miles, check engine light, service now message. Took it to dealer, says the catalytic converter has to be replaced. Any others had their cats go bad? Any ideas what could cause the cats to go bad?

POST 10Original post

I have had both stock cats replaced under warranty. The dealer told it is a very common problem with the 06's

POST 11Original post

Having mine replaced under warranty with 27K on the odo. It is an 06.

POST 12Original post

I had one catalytic converter fail at 5-6K miles. My car is also an '06
