My wheels came with 265s on (Yokohama), which I ran with no issues for 6 months.

Suggestion
So, when it came time to change them, I went to Michelins, as OPC picked up on it at a service and although they said it was ok to run 265s (which is in the manual), they would really recommend 285s on the back of the facelift with 18" 10J wheels.

I dont know whether you 996ers ever run 265's on the rear 10" like the NB 993 but they are considerably cheaper than 285's and a full set of Conti's (225/40 & 265/25) can be had for under £600 incl VAT.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Are the Conti Sport Contact 2 another viable (cheaper) alternative on the 996 or do people generally think they're pants?
Sorry OP, this isnt answering your question really.
What sort of Michelins?
I think £500 for the pair is an extremely good price, especially considering the weak £.
From memory, my PS2 N3s (might be N4, can't remember) were just under £300 each for the rear and that was a very good price.
Obviously you could consider Bridgestone, Pirelli, Conti's etc, but Michelin are generally considered to be best wet/dry/noise/performance tyre for the 996.
Just looked on Blackcircle.co.uk and they range from £220 (for Pirelli) up to £295 for the Michelin (fitted).
Cheers.
Contis are my second choice, Michelins have always been just that little better for grip in my mind. Didn't get on with the Pirellis that were on it originally

I think the concensus is that Michelins are about the best all round - grip, wear, noise, etc, but that's what you pay for. £500 is a really good price. Sometimes Costco do a special offer, so worth a call if you are a member.
Just fitted Yokohama Advan Sport V103s to my car. Fed up with replacing Contis on the rear every 5000 miles or so, and just wanted to try something different. Very pleased with them so far.
Every time I buy tyres I do a lot of searching on the net and calling people up, yet I always end up at Martins Tyres, one day I'll just go straight there, superfast service too, just don't expect a coffee machine or luxurious waiting room!
:thumb:
By the way Oze, did they give you a price for Bridgestone S-02 as well?
+1 very good price
Best I've had for a full set 225/40 & 285/30 Mich PS2 is £800 fitted incl VAT which is £100 more than Conti SP N2 like for like.

Oh on the Conti feedback I find them superb and dont think the Mich's are justifiably better £ for £ although I've never fitted them to mine.
Hi,
You can run 265s on the rear 10J, as this is the specification of the earlier 996. The manual also says that you can run them as winter tyres.
My wheels came with 265s on (Yokohama), which I ran with no issues for 6 months. I actually like the Yoko's, but they don't make N-rated in 285s.
So, when it came time to change them, I went to Michelins, as OPC picked up on it at a service and although they said it was ok to run 265s (which is in the manual), they would really recommend 285s on the back of the facelift with 18" 10J wheels.
I remember seeing them being mentioned on here a while back, may well have been your thread. As soon as you mention 911UK you're in a different price bucket, always worth a mention
As I'm only replacing the rears I was only asking for the PS2s. Never tried the bridgestones, any good? Always been particular about getting my rubber and geometry in sync
For the same reasons, I have only run on the Bridgestones. They seem fine to me but until you compare like for like I suppose you don't really know. Maybe if I get to the stage where all 4 need replacing I'll try a different brand. Expensive test though!!
You generally get the best price from Martins tyres because he turns over
such a large volume of tyres. He will give you his best price straight off.
If you are in for other tyres he asks if you want cheap, middle or best
quality before you buy.
