2nd Gear Synchro?
Not sure if I have a 2nd gear synchro issue or something else. In the searches I've found, my symptoms seem to be opposite of everyone else's.
Background...
Last Aug after 2.5 glorious days at Indy, my 3-2 downshift got crunchy. Came on suddenly. There are three corners that required this shift. I ran the last two sessions by leaving it in 3rd. When I'd run on the street, it would crunch about every 4th or 5th time. When I got home, I changed the trans fluid (approx 53K mi on it with lots of track days). It seemed to be fixed, but I didn't do anymore DEs so I didn't have an earnest 3-2 shift to really try it out. Drove thru the winter with no issues. Now that the weather has warmed up, the crunch is back when I do a fast 3-2 downshift.
Most of the searches I've found talk about the 1-2 shift being crunchy, it pops out of 2nd gear, and it's worse when the weather or trans is cold. Mine doesn't have any of those issues. Problem is the 3-2 downshift when the weather is warm.
So, is it a 2nd gear synchro or something else? I'm planning to check the trans fluid level to be sure I got enough in when I changed it. If it is a synchro, how tough of a job is it to change? Are there kits available?
Thanks for your thoughts. Indy 2018 is in Aug.
My thought, guess, is that your 2nd gear synchro is getting weak, that may be obvious. So I was wondering if there is a higher viscosity oil you could use. Yes it would make your transmission crunchy when cold but once warmed up it may solve your synchro problem. As I said my thoughts. Good luck!
Re: 2nd Gear Synchro?
If I was having this issue I'd check/ bleed the clutch and add some Lubro Moly MoS2 to the gearbox.
Re: 2nd Gear Synchro?
I would also check that your clutch is disengaging fully...but it's likely that your 2nd gear synchro is worn. Also, are you giving it a good heel-toe blip on the downshift?
I have not heard of anyone rebuilding these transmissions. I've done old 901s and it was not difficult; a manual transmission is not that complicated. It might make more sense to swap in a rebuilt unit or low-mileage salvage.

Yes, I am doing a heel-toe blip.
