you are not paying for an expert but only for someone to adjust the car to factory specs and the Hunter system they use will do just that ..

As for what settings to use; The less camber and toe-in you put on the rear the more you'll be able to steer the car on the throttle.

These cars are mighty fine out of the box on factory settings but if you want something specific, like you use the car more on track than road for instance, or even a particular track more than others - then you *may* benefit from seeing a specialist who can interpret your requirements into a one off setup.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi guys, Just fitted some Bilstein Coilovers to my 996 c4 and now looking for recommendations for somewhere to have geo set up around the Portsmouth area. I know the 996 can be a bit of a ***** to get correct so somewhere with a bit of experience of 996 would be great. Am willing to travel so anywhere in the south would be great. Thanks!
Whilst C of G are the renowned experts here for a local adjustment to factory specs only then halfords or quick fit will do just fine .
The equipment they use is pretty foolproof .. you are not paying for an expert but only for someone to adjust the car to factory specs and the Hunter system they use will do just that .. i used it back at OPC so can confirm that anyone can adjust a car to factory specs with it ...
Even me !
Brookspeed in Eastleigh did my geo recently, after the front sub-frame was dropped for a refurbed steering rack and new control arms were fitted at the same time.
Drives so much better now than it did.
They always have lots of 996/997 models in whenever I am there.
Depends what you want. Anyone should be able to align the car within the Porsche specs. The better ones might even get the left side to match with the right.
However they probably won't align the car to get the specific handling you want - i needed camber outside of factory spec as well as backing off the rear toe to get the car to give me what i wanted.
What he said.
Think about what you want. These cars are mighty fine out of the box on factory settings but if you want something specific, like you use the car more on track than road for instance, or even a particular track more than others - then you *may* benefit from seeing a specialist who can interpret your requirements into a one off setup.
Whatever you do, make damn sure your rear camber and toe eccentric bolts are not seized. So many people (including me) have gone for an alignment only to find they can't adjust part of the suspension, leading to an expensive wasted journey.
Not used them personally but The Wheel Alignment Centre Southampton have good reputation. Been told to call them rather than email.
A bit further Nine Excellence at Horley. Mine was done there and I am happy with it.
I would go to Center of Gravity - They will transform the way the car handles and drives. They have also "put right" issues caused by companies who say they can align the car.
It will be the best mod you can do to the car and a great experience as Chris and his team are chassis guru's!!
I wouldn't touch anyone else and would not advise taking your car to a Halfords. CoG specialise in Porsches.
IMHO
I personally wouldn't touch Brookspeed with a barge pole but the wheel alignment centre is spot on. My cars always go there. Serves good coffee too
Sorry to hi jack your thread. Is there anywhere in Northern Ireland?
I'll have everything sorted and I'm thinking all I really need are the settings for a better drive. I have one place lined up that sets up rally cars so he's top of the list
A lot of people will poo poo this, but if you know what settings you want, then you can take it more or less anywhere with a decent alignment kit and tell them what settings you want. As long as your adjusters aren't seized then they will be able to do it. It's not rocket science. I paid about £60 for my last four wheel alignment and got to help/supervise the technician to make damn sure I got what I was asking for.
What you're paying for at the specialists is their knowledge on what settings get what results in terms of how the car drives. You're not paying for their ability to swing a spanner.
As for what settings to use; The less camber and toe-in you put on the rear the more you'll be able to steer the car on the throttle. You don't generally need loads of camber on the front, as the more camber you put on the front, the smaller the contact patch is for the brakes to work with, and the longer your stopping distances will be. Also, the sidewall height of your tyres has an influence on how much negative camber you can use, as taller and softer sidewalls will need more, and shorter stiffer sidewalls will need less in order to allow the tyre's contact patch to be maximised in corners.
What works for me is stock settings on the front, and zero toe at the rear, with about -2 degrees camber. I'll be dialling the camber back to -1 degree when my new parts are fitted to allow this. I really must stress to everyone reading this that these are MY PREFERRED SETTINGS, not an invitation for a critique on them or a recommendation for others to use them.
