Suggestion

After having a look and finding minimal play in the waterpump, and using the stethoscope on various parts they conclude it's the pulleys that are the cause of the noise and replace all three.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Might be impossible for anyone to help, but I've got a metallic rubbing noise, like a bearing failing, coming from the right side of the engine. It's engine speed dependent and is at it's worse around 2000-3000 rpm. My first thought was the waterpump - i sounds exactly like the early stages of it failing. So, booked in with my local Porsche specialist who agree it sounds like the waterpump and get looking into it. After having a look and finding minimal play in the waterpump, and using the stethoscope on various parts they conclude it's the pulleys that are the cause of the noise and replace all three. However after picking the car up, the noise is still there. Before i get them to replace the waterpump - could it be anything else?

POST 2Original post

need an oil change? I would seriously consider changing the oil and sending a sample for testing. if you have a bad internal component like a bearing, the metallic content numbers should show it. also, filter inspection can give you some hints...….good luck.

POST 3Original post

Did you check the engine fan? It blows hot air out of the engine bay through the right side vent. My fan would give me an intermittent whine.

POST 4Original post

I would concentrate on the waterpump. You shouldn't have any play there.

POST 5Original post

Problem kinda solved! It was the waterpump after all... it decided to drop it's coolant in the work carpark (fortunatly) so fingers crossed it's not done any serious damage!

POST 6Original post

I was gonna hit "Like" but I don't like that you're water pump let go, LOL. When mine went it sounded like a jet engine was running right behind my right ear. Never heard anything like it before or since but it was the water pump giving up. Wouldn't ya think when they fail they'd make the same kind of noise? But no, they keep you guessing. Hope there's no residual damage and you're already back on the road.
