It's been a long week for me and the
2008 Cayman S
.
Tuesday
: passenger side window regulator is starting to fail. Press to go up, windows goes up 5 inches, then back down to bottom. Press again and window moves to top as it should.
Thursday
: stopped a at traffic light. Shift to 1st when the light turns green. Shift into 2nd, no gear found. Shifter is freely moving to where 3rd and 4th gear are but not finding anything. Car is stuck in first gear. Was able to limp the car home about 2 miles in first gear. Suspecting the shifter cables disconnected somewhere.
Friday
: Came outside to take a look if the shifter cables are properly attached to the transmission. Under the car rear passenger side (right) checking the shifter cables. They are both attached. However, heard some water dripping to the ground. Move to the drivers side front to find a puddle of coolant right behind the front wheel.
For a ten year old car. These are some annoying issues. Anyone else suffering this week?
Did you figure out your shifter issue? On a 6-speed, the shift cable that sounds disconnected is on the left side of the box, not the right, as you describe.
You can see the shift cables attached to the transmission. I think they disconnected at the shifter inside the car. I haven't had a chance to take apart the interior to check.
Sounds like a sucky week. To be positive, bad things happen in threes, so they say, and running with that, you're done at least. Good luck with all the issues. Please keep us posted.
Fore-aft on the shifter is the connection at the left side of the transmission. That's the cable that typically breaks (a bit in front of the transmission where it goes through a bend) and I suspect that is your problem.
You sure it's coolant and not A/C evaporator discharge?
I can't help you mechanically, but your Cayman is as 100% the fun of a new one. Taking it to an indy and getting it fixed is far cheaper than buying a replacement.
Update on the car.
The shifter cable snapped just before the transmission. New cables have been installed and the car is driving.
The leak was not coolant as I first thought, instead it was windshield washer fluid. Turns out the pump is right in front of the left wheel. The pump failed and was leaking out fluid. I guess of all the fluids to leak windshield washer fluid is the best to lose.
The window, well it goes up and it goes down. It takes 1 or 2 more attempts but works for now. I opted to have a deep sump oil pan and baffles installed so I can track the car more without the oil starvation issue.
The Cayman is back on the road and still gives me a great smile.
Cheers everyone!
