Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi guys! I just start hearing a sharp grinding noise ONLY at cold start in the morning when the outside temperature is below 0 C. After start, noise is gone. Car runs fine. I have recorded a video: cold winter start noise - YouTube Is this an issue with starter? or belt? Since it only happens when it's cold outside, should I worry about it? Thanks!

POST 2Original post

Heard it myself a couple of times. Went away by itself. Still no idea what it is. Sorry

POST 3Original post

If it only happens when cold if you want carefully note the serpentine belt routing and direction of rotation then remove it. Start the cold engine and listen if the noise is still present. If not present, and it returns when you install the belt the noise is in the accessory drive system. If the temperature is really cold it could be belt noise or idler/tensioner bearing noisy from the extreme cold. How "fresh" is the belt? Maybe it is time to change? Check the belt for any sharp edges. If you find one this is a sign the belt is not tracking properly and this can be a sign of a loose/worn accessory drive. Most often the loose/worn drive is the water pump. If the noise is present with the belt removed it is coming from either the starter or inside the engine. The starter gear's over run clutch could be going bad or just reacting to the extreme cold weather. Another possible explanation is due the cold the pinion gear is slower to disengage with the ring gear and there's a bit of gear noise. If you want, and it is never a bad idea, have the car at the shop and arrange to demo the behavior to a qualified/experienced tech.

POST 4Original post

Thanks for your detailed reply. I think I have to bring the car to a shop and play the video for them to have a further check. Thanks

POST 5Original post

Did you ever figure out what the noise was from? I have the same noise and have assumed it's normal, but thought I'd double check. Thanks,

POST 6Original post

I've got the same noise in a 2006 Cayman S w/ 55K miles. Any further update from anyone?

POST 7Original post

My 07 CS is experiencing the same problem on start up. In all weather conditions but only when the engine is cold. Takes about 10 mins for it to not make the noise on start up. Anyone work out why and how to fix??

POST 8Original post

This sounds to me like a starter bendix hanging in for a moment after the engine start .

POST 9Original post

I was just cruising through the forums and was curious about this post. I have the exact noise as well! I thought is was the AOS and replaced it, but to no avail the noise was still there!. What was the final diagnosis?

POST 10Original post

I agree with J Patterson, when the AOS goes it looks like you're spraying for mosquitoes hard to miss.

POST 11Original post

In order to remove the starter, it looks like I will need to remove the plenum and tb as well. Hmmmm now i'm thinking its time for an IPD Plenum!!!!

POST 12Original post

Just to update this post. Bought a new Bosch starter and installed it!! It was not too bad in\out within about a hour! You have to take the plenum out in order to access the starter. The bottom bolt of the starter is reachable by taking the front engine cover out and with a few extensions work your way in and get the bad boy out! The starter will easily wiggle out from the top of the engine. New starter is a dream!! Fired up within a few seconds!! Will report back in a few weeks to rule out anything else, but this was a breeze and joy to work on!!

POST 13Original post

Sound like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AWNst8RROs It was starter motor for me. There's also a link to Burners car's youtube channel where he shows you how to lube up the start motor to fix the issue

POST 14Original post

After replacement of the starter(months ago), I have had no more noises upon start-up. I'm 99.9999% sure the replacement solved my dilemma. Just as addicted2wasabi posted the video, I too had this exact noise!
