I stopped using indies when the cost of having car serviced/repaired got too close to that charged by a dealer's service department.

thanks jack911, that makes me feel a lil' better, but i haven't seen anybody pay as much as this, even with a water pump, i checked automotion & theirs was only $134 & he charged me $500, there was 2 women in there is why i didn't say anything, but come monday i'll have plenty to say, charged me for 3 hours labor for ignition switch that takes maybe 30 minutes, thats my fault i should have done that, but i thought with everything else he would just put that on too, but it probably didn't help when i went to check on the car last week in my h2.

Don't know what the Indy completed as a result of the 60K service (could be more involved than the P recommended 60K potentially) but the Water pump replacement should be around $750 all in so that still leaves $1500 for the balance which is high.

At an indie, I paid $150 for an oil change when the dealer wanted $260 for the same service.

An occasional price premium can be worth it in the long run (speaking generally, here, without prejudice to your situation).
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

just got my bill for 60,000 check up, was $2,300 from my local indy, the only one by the way, though i did need a water pump, which he charged me $500 for, damn, if i had known this i would have drove a 100 miles to dealership & got screwed, charged me $1,200 for labor! can anybody give me their opinions on this, from what i've seen on some of the posts this is just a lil' bit HIGH! even for a dealer this would be high.

Didn't try to search around to find a cheap and good indy. Already had the one most said was the best and while not that cheap, not nearly as expensive as the dealer. At least initially.
But this indy got expensive. And since dealer quite a bit closer and offers amenities I feel worthwhile -- more comfortable waiting area; WiFi; good coffee; good shuttle service; and some offer free or low-cost rental car -- I just take my business to a dealer.
Sincerely,
Macster.
well van $1200 for LABOR, $500 for water pump & seal,i don't know how long a water pumps takes to put, maybe 3 hours. i need to go back & see him monday, it looks like he charged me 3 hrs labor for ignition switch that i bought, anyway you can see way this is going, what do i say when i go back, other than about the 3 hrs to put ignition switch on. i went ahead & paid cash, so he knocked $200 of.
Do you want the warming KY or the cooling KY....either way your gonna need it. OUCH....so happy I work on my own cars. You coulda bought yourself a small lift for that money.
I just spent $1900 on my 968 putting in a new radiator and waterpump & hoses - and I got the part 20% off from Sunset - which would add $750 to this for a total of $2850 with Tax . It was 10 hours labor @ $140 / hour - and I had a few other things done at the same time plus clamps, Antifreeze, etc + WA State tax. Work on the water pumper cars adds up when you start taking these cooling systems apart. While this seems expensive I look at it divided by the next 70,000 miles I plan to drive the 968 (or in your case the 996). This same work on my Audi A6 cost about the same - give or take 10%. Take your BMW or MB sedan in for a water pump and I bet the tab is close. Anyone how owns any of these cars must accept that they are 25% more expensive that your average Ford or Toyota. So which do you prefer driving?

Sorry about your experience, next time I'd shop around and ask for some price quotes. Sounds like your Indy is taking lessons from the healthcare industry, where they charge whatever they please, and not even the providers have any idea why you were charged what you were and for what. It's not their area of expertese, but you still have to pay.
Oh yea, and the K-Y will be another $177 please!

Sometimes I pay my indie a lot more than a dealer would charge, and sometimes I pay them a lot less. The reason for the difference is that my indie isn't a flat rate shop. The meter runs until the job is done properly. That isn't how dealer shops work. The flat rate system can be fine if you're simply replacing parts, but it will screw you if you're trying to repair something or to diagnose something tricky. The horror stories I could tell you about flat rate shops...
I stopped worrying if I was getting 'screwed' on a transaction by transaction basis. Over all, across all the work that's been done on my car, I feel well taken care of. If you have a bad indie, get rid of them. But sometimes it's a good idea to understand how their business works and get to know them. An occasional price premium can be worth it in the long run (speaking generally, here, without prejudice to your situation).
At an indie, I paid $150 for an oil change when the dealer wanted $260 for the same service. With expensive toys, you have to pay the pied piper every once in a while. My Porsche is cheap compared to my Ferrari. Every 3 years, my 348 gets an engine out major service which costs $7k, regardless if the car needs it or not. But how can you put a price on the thrill of driving a Porsche or Ferrari!
well my car was there for about 10 days, cause he was busy & i told him not to get in any hurry on my car, thinkin that would help on the cost, because he could just get to mine in between jobs, that didn't help, but he is the only indy around & the dealer is 100 miles, but while my car was there i noticed 3 other porsches came in & out so i guess some of the other porsche guys apparently trust him or this may have been their first time too, guess i just cannot stand going somewhere like this & they see porsche & well now's a good time to make up for a slow month. thx everyone for your input, guess i can be thankful there were no major problems.
my annual service on GT3 is off my own list of items to do, which is bigger than 60k miles service.
all fluid, all plugs, all filters (i do mean ALL) are changed.
all suspension joints chk'd nut and bolted.
all done about 1500
