Installed the
numeric shifter
and cables on my 5 speed
2007 cayman
today, been for a drive and not overly impressed. I don’t feel it’s much different to the OEM short shifter and standard cables.
Also have a bit of extra noise in the cabin. I got the extra sound deadening, but even with that it’s still noticeable.
I’ll give them a few miles and see how they settle in.
987.1 CS with 6MT. I installed the Numeric cables but with the OEM short shifter a couple of years ago. Bought the cables due to the reported breakage issues of the OEM cables. Eventually removed the cables after several months of daily driving - did not care for the notchiness - thought I'd get used to it but never really liked it. Replaced the Numeric cables with the updated cables and revised linkage connectors for the 987.2.
Never had excessive noise from the Numerics (used their cable isolaters that surround the cables in the engine compartment as well routed the cables thru the original rubber gasket on the firewall).
2006 CS. Six yrs ago, had the
numeric cables
installed with my OEM SSK. If I had the money at the time, would have installed the
Numeric
shift linkage assy since I heard great things from people who track their 987. Installation of the cables wasn't easily, took 2 guys to wrestle with the cable routing and adjusting.
30k miles later, no issues, good shifting, never needed any adjustments.
Definitely better than OEM cables and I wasn't sure at the time if the
987.2
OEM cables were that much of any improvement for about the same cost as Numerics.
One of the first updates I made to my
987.2
after I bought it 2 years ago. The car had 50k miles at the time and I was worried about the cables snapping. Went with the updated OEM cables which get routed with less of a tight turn to reduce the chance of breakage. I also decided to upgrade to the
GT3
shifter at the same time to improve the sloppiness of the OEM shifter which is mostly made with plastic parts.
The
GT3
shifter has some metal parts but is not as tight as the
Numeric
. I consider it a middle ground between the OEM and
Numeric
In terms of feel as well as cost. The updated OEM cables have the same NVH profile as the original cables. Not sure about durability as I’ve had them for 2 years and about 7k miles.
I only have
Numeric
's SSK installed. I opted to keep the OEM cables as it was updated to the revised design with the extra linkage by a previous owner after reading about the extra NVH
Numeric cable
introduces.
As for the
Numeric
SSK, it's night an day. I thought the OEM shifter was utter sh**.
Not sure if the 6 speed shifter and cables are different than the 5 speed model, but the before OEM of both the shifter and cables and after with Numeric. Its like night and day. The shifter is much more precise, the cables improve the feel of the syncro engagement on each shift. I use engine braking a lot, and I really like this set up.
I have installed the
Numeric shifter
and cables on my 07
Cayman S
. My immediate reaction was that things were tighter/more precise. It may be familiarity but over time it seems to have softened up somewhat.
Keep in mind that what you feel at the shift knob is influenced by 3 major components. The shifter itself. The cables. And the set of two levers on the tranny that move the tranny internals. Problems/wear with any one of these 3 can effect the shifter feel. Frankly, I think the shifter is the least important part of this equation. The shifter does nothing to control the shift pattern. Without the cables attached, it is just a set of levers. Yes, metal levers are better than plastic levers but at the end of the day, both components are very stiff compared to the cables. If you have problems at the tranny, that is another can of worms, but I think the cables are key.
Here is a short video I did on the OEM shifter. The
Numeric
unit operates the same way, it just replaces some of the plastic components with metal ones.
I have both
Numeric cables
and shifter in my
2007 Cayman S
. Have been engine braking for over 5 years using this combo with a smile on my face. Excellent mod and no broken cables like the old OEM oncs. I feel every shift and the syncro action. Yes a little more transmission noise through the steel cables.
That’s for the input all. I’ve since stripped the car again and adjusted the cables. It’s much nicer now. I have it set of the lowest setting which feels the nicest/sharpest of the three options.
out about 30 miles on it so far, I’ll see how we get on for yeh
next
few hundred.
