As for OP's car of no dash wart and no 639, previous owner had the sport button installed probably per that

Suggestion
All the sport button did on that car was sharpen the throttle response with some throttle remapping and change the limits of when the PSM and other nannies would step in when driving aggressively

Replace throttle pedal mapping (personally i don't like it)

Suggestion
For an autocross run I normally turn off PSM, PASM to sport but leave sport mode off.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

After an exhaustive search I can't seem to figure out a detail relating to the
Cayman S
that I purchased last year. Hoping the collective can help. The car is a 2006 and comes with both
PASM
and Sport buttons (no chrono dash wart). Vin lookup reveals it sold with the
PASM
option but no listing of option 639
Sport Chrono Package
.
So what do I have here? Hoping someone more familiar might be able to clarify:
Did the Sport button come with PASM?
What exactly does it do? Does it only control PASM and PSM or would it also adjust throttle mapping and harden the rev limiter as per Sport Chrono?

Many thanks!
It's possible that a prior owner retrofit sport mode to the car via a kit like this:
Porsche Sport Mode Software - 997 & 987
I can't find the reference now, but from my prior research the sport button:
If you have PASM, puts it into sport mode (which you can turn off again with the shock button)
Changes shift programming if you have tiptronic
Changes throttle pedal mapping (personally I don't like it)
Hard rev limiter instead of soft
Allows for a few more degrees of yaw rate (I think this applies if PSM is still on)
PSM kicks back in if both fronts wheel at lockup versus just one wheel
Hope that helps. Personally I haven't found it very useful. For an autocross run I normally turn off PSM, PASM to sport but leave sport mode off.
You mention sport "buttons" as in more than one, or do you just have one sport mode?
Sport Chrono
cars come with both a sport and sport + option. A single sport button does not mean the car has the
sport chrono
option unless I'm misunderstanding the question? You can have a sport button with zero other options on the car, as my old 2008 CS was equipped that way
Helpful indeed. My understanding of the Sport button matches yours. It could very well be a previous owner added the button/functionality. Since I can't confirm that fact, I was wondering if anyone here might know more about how PASM was packaged for the 2006 launch year (i.e did Sport come bundled with PASM?) Or if anyone else had a similar setup and VIN readout?
Apologies, I meant Sport button (singular). I have a
PASM
and Sport button but the
Sport Chrono Package
is not listed on my VIN option list and I am curious if maybe the two options were packaged together in 2006 or something like that? Also wondering how I might confirm if in fact I do have full Sport features.
That was the point in my reply. You dont have the
Sport Chrono
option or else you would also have an additional sport + button and the clock. That's why you are not seeing the SC option on the VIN lookup
During my hunt for a 987 I did encounter a car with
PASM
and not
Sport Chrono
but it was a 2007. It was this car:
WP0AB29807U783455 | 2007 Porsche Cayman S | VIN Analytics
Noted thanks Arthur That spec is relatively the same as mine.
Still wondering if the
PASM
and Sport buttons may have came together with the
PASM
package? And if so, what does the Sport button do? Is it in fact the same as
Sport Chrono
? If so I find it weird it would not be listed on the sell sheet.
I know of option '639
Sport Chrono
' and option '640
Sport Chrono
Plus' but neither are listed on my VIN list so that leads me to believe either a)
Sport Chrono
was added aftermarket or b) the sport button does something else in this setup - but what?
any help is appreciated!
Again, I had a 2008 which also had a sport button, but no chrono or any other options at all. It was a very lean and light build, so having a sport button does not mean
sport chrono
. All the sport button did on that car was sharpen the throttle response with some throttle remapping and change the limits of when the PSM and other nannies would step in when driving aggressively
This is a copy/paste directly from
Porsche
. It mentions different upshifting for
PDK
equipped cars which obviously doesnt apply to a manual. This is one of the reasons that you will see many people post the opinion that the SC option is more valuable on a
PDK
car than a manual when someone asks in the forum if that option is really worth it or not when shopping for a car
"The SPORT button, which is fitted as standard, enables you to select a setup that favors either comfort or sporty performance. At the push of a button, the electronic engine management system switches the engine mapping to offer a sharper response and engine dynamics that are more direct.
With the gearbox in automatic mode, upshifts take place at higher engine speeds and downshifts are swifter. In addition, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) also switch to SPORT mode to deliver harder damping and more direct steering and, therefore, even more agile cornering."
So what option is the Sport button without Chrono/Dash wart then? The Sport button did not come standard on all CS's and there is no option code for it that I am aware of.
In your case, how do you know it only affected throttle response and dampened PSM? Add in the hard rev limiter and it sounds like Sport Chrono on a manual car to me ¯\

For
987.1
-
PASM
and
Sport Chrono
were different spec'd options. Opt 639 is correct for
Sport Chrono
. Sport Plus didn't come along until
987.2
(2009) with
PDK
trans
Remember reading somewhere of sales figures that said for
987.1
approx 30-40% had Chrono, 20%
PASM
and 10% both Chrono &
PASM
.
As for OP's car of no dash wart and no 639, previous owner had the sport button installed probably per that
Suncoast
kit. You would think that would have been documented by previous owner as a selling feature.
That (Hbiauto.com) non-
Porsche
window sticker isn't correct. Per the VIN, Attached is vinanalytics.com showing the factory options it came with. Prior owner might have done some kind of sport button upgrade. Do you feel a throttle response difference during acceleration if that button is selected?
