I installed the Fabspeeds this past Saturday and had similar issues, but I was able to resolve them.

Blacksport - I recently installed some modded Stock mufflers on my car and I ran into a similar situation with the tail pipes tips being too high (too close to the bumper) on the first muffler one I replaced.

Swapped the muffler mounting bracket on to the Fabspeed can and the first thing that I noticed is that the mounting ears for the bracket needed to be compressed about 1/4" to properly grip the mounting bracket.

Anyway, what I had to do was get it all loose again and completely loosen the bolts that hold the bracket to the muffler and then pull the muffler intake hard into the slip joint to the crossover pipe, tighten the slip clamd and then tighten the mounting bolts.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Pardon the cross post but I figured that more 996 C2/C4 owners have installed Fabspeeds then GT3 owners and since it is basically the exact same system, I could find some help here:
Just curious if someone can solve my problems as Fabspeed is closed and I am mid insallation of the exhuast(mufflers only) on my '04 GT3.
I pulled the right muffler can just fine with no issues. Swapped the muffler mounting bracket on to the Fabspeed can and the first thing that I noticed is that the mounting ears for the bracket needed to be compressed about 1/4" to properly grip the mounting bracket. Then I mounted up the tip and went to put the Fabspeed can on the car...this is when the fun started!
The muffler inlet just didn't want to line up with the crossover pipe/cat converter pipe(oem parts not Fabspeed). after lossening the center clamp that holds the crossover pipe in place and gathering up all the strength that I could muster, I got it slipped on and bolted the bracket up to the exhaust carrier that hangs off the engine. When I went to aligne the tip, it is only about 1/4" away from bumper opening while with the stock muffler, there is a good 1" and the bottom of the tip lines up with the bottom of the bumper.
So I have 2 problems. First, I am a little worried that the stress on the pipe from muscling it into place will cause it or the muffler to crack with heat expansion/cantraction. Second, with the tip so close to the bumper, it will certainly crack the paint over time and looks stupid as it no longer lines up nicely with the bottom of the bumer.
Anyone have any thoughts? I would like to finish the install this evening but that doesn't look like it may happen!
Thanks!
-Carl
Carl,
Did you leave EVERYTHING loose when you hung the mufflers in place. You must wait until everything is fitted in place, and all clamps are where they should be, then you can start tightening everything down. If you attached the mounting brackets firmly to the muffler, or firmly in position on the car, it will be a real bugger to force everything into place.
I hear what you are saying and I have everything loose now as I never really snugged it down to begin with as I had to wrestle it into place.
I still can't figure out why the tip is sitting high as there is no way to lower it...very odd! I would assume the muffler wasn''t built to spec but I have never heard of troubles with Fabspeed before.
No relation to your issue but the Fabspeed on my 964 doesn't fit well at all and is barely hanging on by one clamp. Very poor design and rattles all the time. I bought the car with it but would not buy another as when I called them to solve the problem they said it was as it should be.
My right Fab was not terribly well shaped. The inlet pipe was dented at the end and I had to pound it out. it was a real bear to get the inlet of the Fab and the outlet of the cat to line up. They are hand made and that will account for some variation, but the dented inlet pipe was disapointing. It didn't happen in shipping. It was shipped that way.
I am still at a loss, the only thing that I have been abke to think of is to remove the tip and have the pipe cut and lengthened to lower it down the right amount. Seems like I shouldn't have to do this on a new exhaust!

The trick is to rotate the tips either left or right (depending on which muffler it is. Here is a pic of what I mean. The blue circle indicates the clams to loosen, then turn the tip pipe left or right (shown by the red arrow). BTW, this is not a pic of the mufflers I installed. Hope this helps.
Thanks but that actually isn't it either! I have some ideas like bending the tabs the hold the muffler can up to lower the can but there isn't really enough movement available there to do much so it may be a waste of time but why not?!
Blacksport350 - I think you when you bent the bracket welded to the muffler to "fit" the stock bracket (that attaches to the car itself), you probably made it too high. I had the same fitment problem on the passenger side when installing fabspeeds also. I bent the tabs (like you suggested) to get it lower and also added some washers/spacers to 2 of the 3 mounts to get the downpipe to line up correctly with the OEM sleeve to the cats. Then the tip was close enough that I could adjust the two so that they matched.....
Thanks for the imput guys...problem solved! Also, thanks to Fabspeed as they very helpfull and responsive.
Anyway, what I had to do was get it all loose again and completely loosen the bolts that hold the bracket to the muffler and then pull the muffler intake hard into the slip joint to the crossover pipe, tighten the slip clamd and then tighten the mounting bolts.
What I did on the passenger side to avoide any problems worked like a charm...When I went to mount the OEM muffler bracket to the Fabspeed can, I put it up on the bench and tightened the bolts down until the tabs were bent in the appropriate amount and them backed them off so they were completely loose. Slipped the muffler in the car, lined up the bracket with the mount that hangs off the engineand started one nut. Then I cranked it in the slip joint, thighten the bracket to car nots and then finally the bracket to muffler can bolts. Worked like a charm and both tips are perfectly lined up and have the correct side to side and top to bottom spacing.
Sounds great, looks stock and saves a little weight. I can't wait to get out on the highway or the track. The GT3 really needed a little exhaust growl to balance out all the other wonderfull mechanical noises that it makes.
I could do a second installation in no time flat!
Hey Blacksport350,
Did you previously own a M Roadster and visit the M forum? I also recently made the switch to a 996. I installed the Fabspeeds this past Saturday and had similar issues, but I was able to resolve them. I love the new sound although it could be a tad bit louder for me.......
