Also - being a fairly high mileage car (80,000+), would anyone recommend a different grade of oil for my next change?

If you order anything from opie oils before Jan 10th, use discount code VATBUSTER for 5% off everthing, I've just ordered some Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 and got 10% off for becoming a member and a further 5% off using the discount code :thumb:

Being a recent new 996 owner I read all the post with great interest and was just wondering if it was beneficial to use an engine additive along with any of these better quality oils?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It worked for me, and I'm still using it in mt 996T.
Hi chaps.
Having just recently bought my C2 I am looking for an oil top up.
The car was serviced by Porsche Shop just before being sold to me and they used Shell Helix fully synthetic.
Does anyone know which grade of Helix Porsche shop use so I can go get a litre from Shell for topping up with?
Also - being a fairly high mileage car (80,000+), would anyone recommend a different grade of oil for my next change?
I was going to go to Mobil 1 0W40 but am worried that it might be an unsuitable viscosity for a high mileage 3.4 C2 engine.
All opinions welcome!
Cheers.
I used Fuchs Titan Supersyn 5W-40 in my 3.4 and found it to be better than a 0W-40. It virtually eliminated the cold strart-up clatter and occasional puff of smoke which is common on higher mileage 996s.
The two approved Shell oils are:
Helix Ultra 5W-40
Helix Ultra C 0W-40
Cheers Richard!
I might go for the Fuchs 5W40 next time round.
Our business stocks Fuchs Silkolene Pro S 5W40. I'm guessing the only difference between it and the Titan Supersyn is that it's an ester based fully synthetic and quite a bit more expensive?
We recommend it to the Evo / Subaru / Honda drivers.
Yes, Silkolene is much more expensive, being ester-based. I chose Titan because it is Porsche approved, and uses the same technology as Mobil 1, but is 5W rather than 0W. It worked for me, and I'm still using it in mt 996T.
I don't know of anyone using Silkolene Pro-S in a 996, but it gets excellent reviews. If you can get it cheap enough, I can't see any reason not to use it. Maybe someone with a better knowledge of oils can comment......
I get mine from Opie Oils, and their technical people are very knowledgeable and helpful. Might be worth a phone call. 01209 215164.
Thanks again Richard,
I know Guy from Opie so I might give him a shout in the new year.
I get the Pro S 5W40 at wholesale price so if it's suitable then I'll go down that route, if not I think I'll go for the Fuchs Supersyn 5W40 as I think it's cold cranking viscosity would offer more protection than the Mobil 1 0W40 even though the Mobil is a very good oil.

20 odd years ago when I use to rally old MK1 Escorts (Castrol R oil - Ah, I can still smell it now
), Silkolene use to sponser some cars, They made some pretty big claims about their addatives such as - one car contesting the Safari rally with all the oil drained but a can of their silicon additive added! Pretty impressives stuff.
A quick heads up,
