Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

just worth getting it on a porsche tester and checking some oxygen sensor values to see if its already running lean and trying to cope with an existing air leak.
Leading evidence: 'Check some oxygen sensor values' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check some oxygen sensor values' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

To my knowledge my engine has never been rebuilt and only has 30k on the clock, last service was by an indie and he gave it a clean bill of health - but then he probably didn't run it without the oil filler cap on!!

need him to change the headlamp bulbs anyway - the key for getting the headlamp units out is missing from the cars tool kit!

It should not be doing this as we have had alot of bad running faults due to an oil cap not been correctly re-fitted, If its stalling i would imagine you have an air leak somewhere and by opening up the filler cap you introduce more air and it can not cope....

That may tie in with the non linear use of oil - it seems to use more when its full and then usage gradually tails off as the level falls down the dipstick, eventually nearly stopping.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

sounds like it could be causing an electrical short? Earth?
Ring up JZM or speak to the Compan who did the rebuild.
Migration info. Legacy thread was 25800
Thanks for that, but I think it is related to the pressure in the crankcase effecting the DME but I just dont know how.

okay just to drag this out of the archives....
have searched all previous and this is the only mention of it.........
my 2002 c2 has the same issue - if you open the oil filler with the engine running it tries to stall.... quite a bit of pressure in the crankcase :dont know: anybody got any ideas?
only found this out as i was warming the engine through prior to some tinkering and decided to inspect the inside of the filler cap - as i took it off, hiss of pressure escaping and engine nearly stalled..... repeated process a couple of times and its definately removing the filler cap that does it..... :?: any ideas :?:

Sorry prehaps i wasn't clear - the first three posts are from 2005 and are the only reference i can find on the site to symptoms that i am now experiencing.....

Is the oil filler cap more difficult to remove than it used to be when the engine is runnung? Is there quite a lot of suction on the tube, or a 'gasping' sound? If so, it may well be the air/oil separator. Take off the inlet tube to the throttle body and open the butterfly. If you see an oily residue inside, then it's the AOS.
Richard.....
she definitely sucking not blowing!!!........ (que onslaught of double entendres!)
So i guess that must be the oil air separator then? That may tie in with the non linear use of oil - it seems to use more when its full and then usage gradually tails off as the level falls down the dipstick, eventually nearly stopping. Come to think of it the back of the car does seem to get dirty, almost sooty?, but i always put it down to the shape of the car.....
If it is the seperator - how much are we looking at to replace it?
James
There should be
some
negative crankcase pressure, but not a huge amount.
If you can get to see inside the throttle body it will give a much better idea if the AOS has gone or not. Oil mist on the back of the car might also be a clue.
The AOS itself isn't expensive (about £70) but it is a bit of a pig to get at, tucked down the back of the engine (looking at it). It would probably be a couple of hours work for an indy.
i will drop the car into matt at autowerke and see what he says on monday..... need him to change the headlamp bulbs anyway - the key for getting the headlamp units out is missing from the cars tool kit!
Thanks for your help as always richard...... will report findings to confirm you suspicions !
James
I found this thread on RennTech, and a few people have had the same symptoms:
