If so its more than likely a exhaust mount from manifold to catalytic convertor..secured by 3 M8 nuts...more than likely corroded have a look..

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi, My 996 1990 model has just today started to sound on every start up as though there is a hole in the exaust pipe. It sounds terrible for about 10 mins then gradually clears up. CHecked for holes and couldnt see any, however it seems also within that 10 mins only the left side exhaust expells fumes. It seems like there is a mechnism that is jammed and then releases like a choke in the old cars. Any ideas before I go into Porsche dealership? THANKS

POST 2Original post

Hi, If its 1990 its not a 996...i presume you mean 1999 ? If so its more than likely a exhaust mount from manifold to catalytic convertor..secured by 3 M8 nuts...more than likely corroded have a look.. Mike

POST 3Original post

Exacty what mine did during the summer, very noisy on start-up but after 5 or 10 mins the noise was back to normal. The gasket between the cat and manifold will almost defintely have gone. Be very, very wary of where you take it to get it done as it seems that all the various bolts on the exhaust system will be rusted to buggery and will snap off leading to potentially very expensive situation. There are various threads on here about it - including mine!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sportsandclassic - Apologise my mistake...its a 2000 (w) reg 996 model carrera 4 Is this a problem you have come cross before and have fixed? If so you are quoating no more than £200? Also do you have a diagram or a picture to show me wher to look? I am a complete novie im afraid, so a guide or direction as to where to look via dagram would be greatly appreciated. pontypool - once you replaced the gasket did the problem get resolved? Should I take it to Porsche garage for diagnosis or a local garage with a Porsche diagnosis machine be able to pick that up? many thanks

POST 6Original post

Hi, Not got any pictures but if you can at all get underneath it and look at where the exhaust first meets the engine cylinder heads then follow it back about a foot or so and there will be a flange with 3 studs/nuts in it...the first section of exhaust system meets the manifold here...check that section on both sides of the car. Yes we have never charged more than £200 plus vat for both sides to be repaired. Thanks Mike
