Using an old carpet is easier to move it from A to B (but slow.....)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've seen the adverts and I'm not convinced by them to be honest.
For certain, in the Alps, they're not considered adequate as a replacement for carrying chains. If you have 265 rears then bite the bullet and get a set of winter tyres if it's your daily driver. Porsche recommend 265's and 225's on the turbo for winter rubber.
Well I am considering those for my wifes car but not as a replacement for snow chains. The snow socks is a good backup to keep with you in icy contitions and is a cheap one as well. Winter tyres cost a lot on the other hand

Not used the socks on a Porsche, but have done on an E class whilst skiing (also had chains) they work very well and I only put the chains on when a friendly policeman saw them and made me, despite making good progress up the steep climb to La Tania with the socks!! As Theo said they are a cheap item to keep in the car just in case.
Thanks guys,
I am struggling to find 285/30/18 it seems that noone makes them that size! which is a pain as I only need a little extra traction to get out of my private lane which is unmade and very steep.
Chains come in around 165-300quid which is steep for 400m of driving.

If you look at the tyre approvals thread started by Minny and follow the link, that page suggests that a lot of tyres don't have clearance to fit snow chains anyway on a Porsche, so its probably these socks or nothing?
A neighbour has a set and thinks they are good for traction, but his wife got to the motorway and couldn't get them off. Not sure why but she's no shrinking violet so it wasn't fear of broken nails!
Autosocks don't list 996 rear tyre sizes, but their own sizes seem to cover a wide range of wheel/tyre combis from big diameter/ high profile but narrow tread to lower diameter/ low profile and wide tread, which suggests there is quite a big fudge factor on sizing. I've tried to email them to ask about this but their email is down (probably swamped given the weather). Also they seem to be out of stock!
Maybe I'll try again when the snow has all melted.... :floor:
IMO if the 911 is your only car then surely winter tyres would be a good option in the long term - keep a look out for second hand wheels + winter tyres. Having the winter tyres already on wheels will keep the down the cost of changing them over every winter (assuming you have somewhere to store the spare set of wheels). And having winter tyres on every winter is not such a bad idea regardless of the snow
I read a recommendation on another forum where someone suggested getting a length of rope and wrapping it around your wheels.
To me that sounds ideal for most situations (people needing to get their cars from their driveway to the main road). It certainly seems to make more sense that snowchains over here as snow is rare, and most of the main roads are clear.
Something worth considering perhaps?
I'm not sure I would want to be wrapping/unwrapping rope around my tyres every time I went out ... however it would make everyday feel like Xmas morning
Its a well known trick especially within the military but you need to be careful as it does not last that long and the rope might end up causing damage. As an emergency measure to move a car slowly for 200-300 meters should work but not beyond that. Using an old carpet is easier to move it from A to B (but slow.....)

Well everyone, it seems like some lengths of axminster would be the most expedient solution for tonights journey into the wilds of Norfolk.
Thanks for all the help, I will report back with comedy photos! :thumb:
