Hi, i've got an 03 996 and no problems to date bar this. when the headlights are on, the dash lights are not coming on. The computer is still working but no illumination on the dash and the "dimmer" function on the tacho reset isn't working either. Also when the lights are on (which work fine) the warning sound when the door is open doesn't work. Sounds like a fuse, but occasionally they work fine which makes me think it's a problem with the switch (car isn't registering the lights are on). any help much appreciated. O

The same thing happened on my 04 996 2 years ago. OPC diagnosed a faulty lighting switch and changed it. The sum total of repairs under my £900 warranty that year :dont know:

Lifes a bitch....If you didn't have the OPC warranty, you know everything on the car would have broke.... Better safe than sorry.... Mines had the best part of £8k spent on it since July

It sounds like the lightswitch to me too, they used to be availiable cheaper as a VW part, don't know whether it still is though.

Search and you will find several other instances on 996. My 04 C4S had the switch replaced a few weeks ago IIRC the switch itself was £65 + vat from an independent - plus labour to fit.

Ok, sounds like switch is the culprit. Many thanks for the advice hopefully that will solve it.

This is true, I think there is a VW part number on the switch body either that or they recognise the number. This is more suprising, the number plate light housings are BMW!

You're right, not a Beetle part! I am getting mixed up with the igmition, the light switch is Mercedes - part number 014 545 64 28 but will say 99661353500 on the box it comes in. Question... is the 996 a kit car? :?
