Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

ETA: If the brake smell gets stronger, might be worth checking your pads?
Leading evidence: 'Check pads' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check pads' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just seen a reference on the Total 911 site to an engine failure article by Phil Raby being a potential problem on 996's highlighted by an over heating type smell.
Has anyone knowledge of what is the cause of this smell and what to do if its detected - it seems that this would be a good indicator of problems to come?

So,,, it really depends on what you are sniffing? Burning rubber, oil or antifreeze?
Zamondo has a terrible antifreeze smell coming from his 04 C4S, it has just been in a garage and they diagnosed pourous heads
Others on here have experienced burnt oil smells, usually it is the rocker cover gasket or internal tubes leaking.. not an expensive job at all.
So what are you sniffing and which end / arch?
So what are you sniffing and which end / arch?
Smells most like burnt rubber (although seems to have mutated as initially reminded me of brake lining smell from heavy goods vehicle) and comes from rear arches predominantgly the near side.
Usually just a sign that you are using the car properley & spirited, I'd say if there is no power loss then don't worry about it. Perhaps identify your whereabouts, lets see if there is a local, experienced nose in your area!
My 00 C2 stinks of a rubbery oilly smell after a good blast, it does not worry me at all. I know I have one slightly weeping RCG, quite common in a boxer engine, so I will fix it if it worsens.
Re: So what are you sniffing and which end / arch?
Excellent...
Sure sign that it has been used as intended... My neighbours think I'm a bit odd, lingering around the back of my car after a spirited drive: Taking in deep breaths of that smell and listening to the ticking sound of metal cooling down...
If you can't smell it, you're not driving it properly :hand:

The sweet (not nice) smell of antifreeze is an indication that something is wrong, so keep a close eye on areas that are common problems, these include
1. Front rads
2. Expansion tank
3. Water pump
4. Hoses, and in particular that one that connects from the engine to the tubes on the offside rear tubes.

Re: So what are you sniffing and which end / arch?
Wouldn't happen to be the gimp suit you tried to hide in the engine bay??? Tell me you didn't leave it in there?!
