Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I can't figure what could be wrong with it other than my clutch will need changing soon - although it's not slipping yet.

It's been there for around a year now but the car drives absolutely fine, I can't hear it when I'm actually driving the car only when I'm starting it or setting off in the morning.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Hi Please can someone advise what this engine noise could be? - YouTube Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube. www.youtube.com . It's been there for around a year now but the car drives absolutely fine, I can't hear it when I'm actually driving the car only when I'm starting it or setting off in the morning. I don't know what the noise is but seems to get louder/clearer when I turn the steering wheel to the left and the right - when the revs die down. I can't figure what could be wrong with it other than my clutch will need changing soon - although it's not slipping yet. I've been told it could be the heat shield/rattly exhaust but I don't have a clue. Any advice will be appreciated. Specs: 2006 (post IMS issues) Boxster 987 2.7 engine 90k FPSH Garaged year round

POST 4Original post

I does not sound like a heat shield to me. Try advancing the throttle slightly. Try to detect if the sound is speed sensitive which will indicate it's rotational in nature. Has the car had chain tensioners? Lastly as Don likes to add, get a stethoscope if necessary to hear the internals of the motor more clearly.

POST 5Original post

Actually - it does sound like a possible exhaust/heat-shield issue.. but as Boris said - the mechanic's stethoscope ($3 Harbor Freight) will make tracking it down much easier.

POST 6Original post

I defer to Don, I am but a humble contributor of my wrenching experiences of long ago, sometimes relevant sometimes not.. He sees and responds to way more posts so his data is likely more on point.

POST 7Original post

Thanks for the responses I'll get it on the ramp for a closer look

Let us know. Sounds like something rattling or rubbing. Doesn't sound too serious.
