Reported cause
I reckon your problem is with an overoiled filter frying the MAF.
Leading evidence: 'overoiled filter frying the maf' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'overoiled filter frying the maf' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean mass air flow sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

It originally had a 3.4 which was replaced (OPC) with a 3.6 - or so I'm led to believe.

Try cleaning the MAF with electrical cleaner, remove the K&N and put the stock airbox back in and see how that goes.

Can you recommend any specific electrical cleaner?

Suggestion
Depending on the fault code that has been registered in the DME, it might reset itself after a few driving cycles (cold-warm-cold).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi All,
I have a '99 C4 with a sports exhaust and a K&N induction kit and I have just had yet another (3 in 12 months) MAF sensor failure - last one was 6 weeks ago!
Whilst accelerating hard I got the standard loss of power at around 4k revs followed by the ABS and PSM lights coming on - exactly the same as the previous two occasions. The fault code is P0740, exactly as before! Apart from the two lights being on the car appears to be driving perfectly (without ABS or PSM working).
Can anyone suggest what might be causing this? Is it as a result of the induction kit, etc? I really need to get to the bottom of this as it is costing me over £300 each time it happens!
Many thanks.
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
In response:
I am not sure what model of K&N it is. It says 'Drycharger' on it and it is conical (if that helps at all).
The car is a 2000. It originally had a 3.4 which was replaced (OPC) with a 3.6 - or so I'm led to believe. However, I understand that this should not mean a different MAF sensor as they are the same.
+1
Even with the 'dry sock' the K&N has been known to cause this MAF fault. Try cleaning the MAF with electrical cleaner, remove the K&N and put the stock airbox back in and see how that goes. :thumb:
No - they aren't the same.
However - I doubt if the replacement engine is a 3.6 as it would need a lot of other things - new DME and a lot of rewiring.
I reckon your problem is with an overoiled filter frying the MAF.
Thanks guys.
Can you recommend any specific electrical cleaner?
Will this reset the lights on the dash?
I bought the car with the K&N so do not have the original airbox!!!
Not specific to the 996, but I know that conical air filters often play havoc with mafs on many other manufacturers cars.
My first port of call would be to get hold of an airbox and fit the standard filter system.
Also get parts warranty replacements on the other MAF units
Any spray electrical contact cleaner from maplin should work. Try also taking off the conical filter and wrapping in newspaper overnight (indoors). See if this absorbs any excess oil...
Depending on the fault code that has been registered in the DME, it might reset itself after a few driving cycles (cold-warm-cold). It depends what code it is as to how many driving cycles, but it usually between 10 and 40. Don't worry about the light being on for a while, as long as it doesn't start flashing.
Failing that, any generic code reader/scanner will be able to reset the fault memory - it doesn't need a Porsche tester do do that on the DME.
If you are anywhere near me, I'd be happy to reset it for you.
hi - if you want the original air filter housing, try these peaople are excellent for second hand stuff, normally in very good condition, cheap, and is often sent over night
