I recently tried to fix one of the cup holders which refused to lock into place. I tried to repair it but that only lasted a couple of days. I've decided on buying a new unit and installing it. There are several OEM/aftermarket units for sale at a reasonable price. I wanted to find out if I would need to remove the silver trim pieces on the old unit to use on the new one or do the replacements come with the trim pieces? My guess is the replacement units do not, but wanted to ask. From what I've seen on YouTube, removing the trim pieces and attaching them onto the new unit is also not a difficult task. Any feedback or comments is appreciated.
They have to be removed (the new cupholder won't come with them), but it's trivial to do (I've even done it with the cupholder installed) - basically get a fingernail under the bottom edge and pull toward you. The covers wrap around the hinge that the little doors pivot on.
Piece'a cake!

Hello
@CaymanSguy65
I actually have a cupholder assembly from my 987.2 for sale in the for-sale section here:
OEM Used Cupholder Assembly from 987.2
Hello all, My first marketplace posting, so I apologize if I missed anything. I'm looking to sell the OEM cup holder assembly from my 2010 Boxster. The assembly works fine (front door moves up and down properly and latches closed as well, cup holders swing in and out smoothly and latch in...

It's used and latches fine... the only thing "missing" is one of the little flappers on one holder. As mentioned, the trim is not part of it normally, so this might be a perfect match for you.
I checked at Suncoast and they say that it's the same part number for all 987-series:
Replacement Cup Holder Assembly
They also seem to have the little flapper available, if you really wanted to replace that too. Of course, you can pull that from your existing one and save yourself the money.
For removal, I believe it's just two screws from underneath (just inside the glovebox)...
Hello. Thank you so much for the good info regarding the cup holder. I have ordered one from Partsgeek.com. Looking forward to installing it once it arrives.
I will visit the New Members Introductions section as mentioned as well. Thank you again for all the great info.
Just curious, if you don't mind me asking, is there some reason you didn't take me up on mine in the marketplace?
Fair enough... thanks for replying!
I saw that in the Partsgeek website, but I noticed it wasn't the OEM one, but a URO branded one. Not that this is bad... just saying that it's not OEM. I'd be curious to hear how it compares.
Must be a common failure part (I need one).
Seems there are
Porsche
,
Febi
, URO, and Chinese copies.
I will let you know once I receive the part and install it. Stay tuned.
I opted for the URO brand as they make several parts for different auto manufacturers. I have ordered
URO parts
for my
Audi
and am very happy with the quality and fit. I wouldn't doubt that URO and some of the others make the parts for the manufacturers and then
Audi
,
Porsche
or some other brand stamp their name on it and up goes the price
URO makes an
AOS
for our cars as well, and it is most certainly NOT recommended. A cupholder is certainly far lower risk and complexity, so I'm not saying you're in for trouble... but just don't do it for the
AOS
, as they fail very quickly from what I've read from others...
