I am removing my brake c.alipers to service rotors.
Porsche
states that bolts are 1-time use only. I checked with my local
Porsche
and the tech I talked to could only say that they replace them any time they are removed .
Are they a stretch bolt to be only torqued once? I removed 1 and did not see any lock-tite,etc on the treads.
Don't mind buying new ones if necessary but would like to know why!
Thanks
I cannot delve into the mindset of
Porsche
when they make these requirements. I'm a mechanical engineer and I stayed at a Holiday Inn so my 2 cents worth would say that are not a stretch bolt. Stretch bolts (also known as torque to yield) typically have a "turn of the nut" tightening process, since torque isn't reliable when they are stretching. These do not have a turn of the nut requirement. So I would guess that the OEM bolts come with the pre-applied coating for locking purposes and it is the coating that is one time use. And they are a critical safety item. As removing the calipers is rare for a daily driver, I agree just replace them and sleep better at night.
I do know that racers, who pull the calipers all the time, replace the bolts with a stud and a nut. Again, evidence that it is not a stretched fastener.
Thanks for the info- I have them on order but was curious as to why needed. I purchased my 08
Boxster
last summer with low kms( 28000) and limited service history other than annual oil and filter service . This winter I am getting all the maintenance done as a 15 year old
Boxster
should have .
Thanks again
I just replaced the front pads on my 981C and reused the bolts since they are not torque to yield.

The reason the bolts are replaced with studs and nuts by the racers is that the aluminum hub carrier will eventually strip the threads in the bolt hole, which is less than ideal. I'm not sure why
Porsche
stipulates that the bolts need to be replaced every time - I reused my mine several times before installing the Rennline stud kit.
I've both replaced and reused bolts on my '11
Cayenne
Turbo. The first time I did pads on it - it got new bolts from
Porsche
. The second time I had a noted
Porsche
independent shop in LA replace the rotors with some almost new ones, they reused the bolts with some
blue Loctite
smeared on them.
Anecdotal results - the calipers haven't fallen off yet.
Those caliper bolts will stretch slightly when torqued. Re-using once shouldn't be a problem. Re-using them many times and eventually the bolts can deform enough to cause the aluminum carrier to strip or the bolts to give.
Porsche
prescribes changing them every time because you don't always know the history and how much usage is too much. I just saw a picture posted on a
BMW
facebook forum last week where a caliper bolt became severely deformed under torque. Don't know the history there.
You can buy the bolts from
FCP euro
and just get new ones every time for free thereafter.
I replaced my fronts with studs due to frequent pad changes. Every time I track the car I swap out for track pads.
I've gone the FCP Euro route and am currently on my 2nd free set. No hassle lifetime warranty.
If you know what you are doing you do not have to replace them every time. Not sure - go the
FCP
route.
