I'm having a hard time deciding which trolley jack and jack stands to buy. What do you guys recommend?
I have a Pittsburgh 2-ton heavy duty, steel, low profile jack that has been working fine and the price was right. Harbor Freight has them:
2 ton Low Profile Rapid Pump® Floor Jack
I spent more on the jack stands and went with the ESCO stands with the rubber pads (vs. the axle stand mount).
I have used both the jack and stands on the Porsche, a Jeep TJ and a Honda CR-V. The system works very well on all of those. I also use Lift Bars with the Porsche so I can lift the entire side of the car in one lift from the factory lift points. The stands then go under the Lift Bars. I also have a 4-post lift, but that doesn't really help when you are doing wheels/brakes. I can actually have the car up on jack stands under the lift which allows me to do everything on "my side" of the garage.
I also have the same Harbor Freight Jack, I like the Jack Point Stand, the price seems high until you use them, safest jack stand you can buy, my 2nd choice would be ESCO stands.
Another vote for the Harbor Freight Pittsburgh jack, although I prefer the aluminum model for lighter weight since it travels to the track with me. I have not tried the Jack Point stands, but they are an elegant, if expensive, solution. I now use QuickJacks, they are fantastic.
Any opinions on jack stands vs wheel ramps?
Be sure the front end won’t scrape. Low profile probably needed.
I’d highly recommend quickjacks.

Ditto on the Quick Jacks. Use them on both the
911
and
CaymanS
. I do need to drive my
Cayman S
(which has been lowered) up on wood planks (1x10x24) so I can get the QJ under the car.
QuickJack. Costco typically has them the cheapest but they aren't on sale right now. I got my 7000TL with the wall hangers and truck adapters for $1700 earlier this year - they are $1900 right now. You can get it without the extras for $1500 for the 7000 and $1300 for the 5000...I recommend going 7000 as you can use it on a larger variety of vehicles.
I had a TLX before that (right after they launched the TL series) but the jack points were too wide for my Vette and probably too wide for a
Cayman
, so I sold it and moved to the TL version.
Once my house is done being built and my 2-post is installed, I'll probably end up selling the TL. They take a little while to sell but go for good money if you are patient as they rarely come up for sale used.
