I am new here. I often drive my CS from the 1st gear and reach 50 mph in the 3rd gear (it is hard not to). At that speed usually it already exceeds the speed limit. I want to get to the 5th but don't want to go thru the 4th. Is that wise? Your inputs are appreciated.
In normal city use, I shift mine that way, that is, 1-2-3-5-6. The 3-4 split is only 19.5% while the 4-5 and 5-6 splits are even smaller at 14.2% and 15.4%. That 3-4 split is so small it's hardly worth the trouble, and the 3-5 split at 30.9% is quite OK. And if I accelerated mine to around 50MPH is 3rd gear, I'd shift it 3-to-6.
Live it up.
In fact you have discovered what is so remarkable about manual transmissions over automatics, and PDKs, you can go into any gear you want, (except reverse), without going through another gear in between. Just don't go from 6th to 1st at 60 MPH and release the clutch.
Thank you all for the information. Now I can enjoy my CS even more.
wow im gonna give this a try too
i have never skipped gears in all the years i have driven manuals
eihter going up or down
but often i have wanted to go from 6-4 or perhaps 6-3
I rarely use 5th gear except on the long uphill into the Sierra Nevada. Mostly do a 4 to 6 shift. One day the fossilized remains of my car will be found with a nearly new, perfectly preserved 5th gear that will no doubt puzzle archeologists. They will conclude that we were all a bunch of hapless dolts with single-geared transmissions. Sorry guys. My fault.
FYI: Sometimes skip shifting will put more wear on the synchros of the transmission for the particular gear that you are selecting.
It's a bit harder to rev match if you are going down 2 gears than just 1 gear JMHO.
Yeah, I actually offered Dave $1 for his 5th gear not long ago. I skip gears occasionally, but never when trying to really haul, and only in normal to light traffic.

While I dont do that in the Boxster (obviously, since I have tip) but I often shift 3rd to 5th on many cars when cruising. Dont think it causes any trouble if the RPM's dont fall too low!
in the pdk if you ramp on it in say 1st and 2nd, and then hold the upshift button, it will select the highest gear possible at your speed, same thing for downshifting, lowest gear to drop down to without overreving
Now that is a nice feature!
