Looks like Porsche is bringing back the old school removable roof: a proper Targa: Type 991 Porsche 911 Targa Spy Photos Photo Gallery - Autoblog What do you guys think? I love the idea, but I'm keen to seen what the rear window treatment will look like. Also not sure where I can store the roof when the weather's nice...

POST 2Original post

Much as I like the open air concept, IMO the glass roof Targa was a much more elegant (and practical) solution ... the hatch rear window was a definite plus! Yes, the rear window will be key ... at least for me... I'm also hoping they have a better folding solution to the removable section; over time the original Targa top got a little frazzled and out of shape.

POST 3Original post

There is supposedly an option in Europe for a glass roof section where the US cars has a sunroof panel. Not quite the sliding targa- unless they build a way to slide it all the way down over the rear glass of the coupe- but still a neat option

POST 4Original post

The photos show a roll bar identical to the traditional style Targa. I think it is certainly coming.

POST 6Original post

I've always loved the Targa and am excited by the idea of a Targa with an electronic roof... I shall be ordering (in traditional pastall orange) sometime next year.

POST 7Original post

Anyone see any news/leaks on this or are they holding on till Detroit?

New 911 Targa to be revealed! Here it is from Porsche presser: http://press.porsche.com/news/pdf/2014/Jan-8-Media-Alert-Porsche-at-the-2014-NAIAS.pdf "Detroit. The Porsche 911 Targa will be unveiled to an international audience at Cobo Center in Wayne Hall during the Porsche press conference on Monday, Jan. 13 at 11:45 a.m. EST. Echoing the design of the original 911 Targa of 1965, the new model features the distinctive Targa bar, a movable center roof section and a wrap-around rear window combined with innovative technical solutions that make it a true modern classic. The introduction of the 911 Targa will be streamed live via Porsche Press Conference . Alongside the 911 Targa, the all-new Cayenne Platinum Edition and Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition will also be on display for the first time at a motor show. The Cayenne Platinum Edition models are based on the Cayenne and Cayenne Diesel variants. The Platinum Editions offer many of the most-requested options as standard. Externally, the special status of these models is demonstrated by exterior detail accents in Platinum Silver Metallic, with an exclusive two-tone standard interior in Black/Luxor Beige. The 3.6-liter V6 engine in the Cayenne Platinum Edition delivers 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque and sprints from zero to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. The Porsche Cayenne Platinum Edition has a base MSRP price $63,300. The Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel engine with 240 hp and reaches 60 mph in 7.2 seconds. The Porsche Cayenne Diesel Platinum Edition has a base MSRP price of $66,900. Prices do not include a $995 destination charge. Both Cayenne Platinum Edition models are now on sale at Porsche dealers. Fresh from its World Premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Porsche Macan S and Macan Turbo will also be on display in Detroit. With the Macan, Porsche has created the first sports car in the fast-growing compact SUV segment. The Macan S, powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 340 hp, can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.0 seconds. The Macan Turbo’s 3.6-liter twin-turbo V6 produces 400 hp and allows the car to sprint from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. The 2015 Porsche Macan models will arrive at U.S. dealerships in late spring, with pricing set at $49,900 for the Macan S and $72,300 for the Macan Turbo."

Re: New 911 Targa to be revealed! Curious: Was this debut mentioned in the pilfered Porsche marketing material that was posted on line? Surely a Targa being rolled out would have made the marketing meeting. It would have been posted along with all models being introduced. Can anyone weigh in? Is picture of presentation still available? What happened to all the "car" magazines? Where's the scoop? Got caught sleeping at the wheel? Didn't pay the men-in-black enough? "Insider" exec was not in loop? Geeeeesh!

Re: New 911 Targa to be revealed! Anyone know why this car is debuting at the Detroit show in Jan but won't be at the Chicago show in Feb? I'm going to the Chicago one and would love to see it but it doesn't appear that they're going to bring it there. Seems they'd want to hype it at as many shows as they can. bummed.

Re: New 911 Targa to be revealed! Re: New 911 Targa to be revealed! From the official press release The new Porsche 911 Targa Featuring the innovative Targa roof: The world premiere of a modern classic Stuttgart. World premiere of the 911 Targa: At the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Porsche is presenting the latest generation of the extravagant 911 model to the public. This model is the first to combine the classic Targa concept with state-of-the-art roof technology. Just like the legendary original Targa model, the new model features the characteristic wide bar in place of the B-pillars, a movable roof section above the front seats and a wraparound rear window with no Cpillar. But unlike the classic models, the roof segment on the new Targa can be opened and closed at the push of a button. When the button is actuated, the fully automatic roof system stows the convertible top behind the rear seat system, providing a real spectacle. The rear-weighted design of the PTM all-wheel drive fitted as standard is a typical Porsche feature, and guarantees that this latest 911 model also offers optimum driving dynamics on all road surfaces and in all weather conditions. With these features, the new 911 Targa is presenting itself as a high-quality, innovative remake of the classic vehicle from 1965. The model shares a great deal in common with the 911 Carrera 4 cabriolet models; up to the window line, the technology and body of the vehicles is more or less the same. The combination of the wide rear end that is typical of all-wheel drive models, the Targa bar and the dome-shaped rear window gives the latest 911 an extremely sporty appearance and a low-slung profile. Two model variants, exclusively with all-wheel drive As with the predecessor model, the new Targa generation comes in two versions available exclusively with all-wheel drive. The 911 Targa 4 is powered by a 3.4-litre, 350 hp (257 kW) flat engine. Equipped with the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) and Sport Chrono package, this model accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds and boasts a top speed of 282 km/h. Its NEDC fuel consumption figures are between 9.5 and 8.7 litres/100 km, depending on transmission, which corresponds to a CO2 emissions level of between 223 and 204 g/km. The top model is the 911 Targa 4S, which delivers 400 hp (294 kW) from a displacement of 3.8 litres. This model reaches a top speed of 296 km/h and, with the PDK and Sport Chrono package fitted, accelerates in 4.4 seconds. Its fuel consumption fluctuates between 10.0 and 9.2 litres per 100 km, depending on transmission, which corresponds to a CO2 level of between 237 and 214 g/km. With these figures, the model is on a par with the high standard set by the 911 Carrera 4 cabriolet models in terms of engine and road performance, as well as efficiency. Both sportscars are certified for compliance with the Euro 6 emissions standard. The new 911 Targa models will be launched onto the market in May 2014. In Germany, the 911 Targa costs EUR 109,338 and the 911 Targa S EUR 124,094, inclusive of VAT and country-specific equipment in each case.

Very cool look and design. What kind of turbulence noise will be generated by all that glass behind you?

POST 28Original post

Least desirable of all 911s to me. Coupe > Cabriolet > Targa. Mileages vary, this is mine.

POST 29Original post

First the car looks good and the roof mechanism looks like an engineer's dream (although not simple). I think of the targa as something in between the coupe and the cabriolet. It is more like a coupe but gives a convenient and secure open air experience at the press of the button. The buyer wants a bit of an open air experience but less of the 'hassle' of a cabriolet. The cars are only offered as 4 wheel drive models.....a significant choice by Porsche positioning the cars more as cold climate choices or did they need the wider body? I do think the car looks better than the cabriolet.... but as a coupe guy I would probably think that way. I get the top approach as a huge convenience with a small weight penalty. A manual top still must be stowed somewhere and represents a chore to take on an off. The automated top is not the simplest approach or the lightest but I assume Porsche knows their buyers (a blunt assessment is very few young or value conscious folks will be buying a targa). I also think the Detroit reveal, in a cold weather city, was not by accident even though Mr. Muller tried to put a different spin on the choice in his speech.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
