Porsche 911
owners in the USA, are you able to turn off DRL(daytime running lights)?
According to the manual below you should be able to do it in select countries if its not mandatory. I have checked in the US and its not mandatory however some people are under the false impression that it is for some reason.
Anyway, here is the part of the manual which talk about it for the modern
911
.

No one seem to know the answer (including the dealer)
If you can confirm if the Daytime running lights can or can't be turned off, I would sure appreciate it.
Thanks.
Is there a particular reason that you would want to? So you can drive at night without the lights on or something?
In my Passat, you can pull a relay. The reason for doing it, at least in the W8 version of the Passat, is that running the
headlights
during the day will have the sun and the lights burning out the lights even faster than the w8 engine will cook them. The bulbs require complete bumper removal to swap and they are very expensive. Better to pull the relay and only run the lights at night when it is cooler. I had gone through 3 bulbs (under warranty) in 3 years, then pulled the relay once the warranty was done and it's been another 4 years and no headlight replacement.
I am talking about Daytime running lights not the night time running lights.
You have confused " Day" vs "night" lights. I am already jeopardizing fuel economy by getting a 4WD vs 2WD car. The DRL is unnecessary in my state and will waste money.
I live in the sunshine state and none of my other cards have them, I am not required to have them and the
Porsche
book manual said that you can disable this feature if you wish however I don't see the option there.
When you have Daytime running lights in the blazing sun, its looks kind of silly and sometimes people with flash their
headlights
at you because they think you forgot to turn off your
headlights
.
You can actually get a ticket in some state if you have your lights on in the day unless it happen to be raining.
So if for nothing else, why is the
porsche
manual wrong regarding their own car? That is the mystery that should be solved.
Does the option exist in your car or is it not there?
Do you know if this trick would work on the
Porsche
?
The problem is the manual said that you can do it if your country does not make it mandatory. Since the USA does not make it mandatory, it should be an easy option to enable or disable yourself.
Just did a Google search and the six speed online guys say only the dealer can do it or if you have PAMIit may be in the menu there.
Why do I have the feeling OP is mistaking the
LEDs
below the
headlights
for DRLs versus the the headlight DRLs which is controllable in the IC.
Durametric tool owners report they can use it to turn off the DRLs.

What about without a Durametric tool using the user interface?
1.Main menu>Vehicle>Settings>Lights&Visibility>... lights>
2.Select Daytime lights in the main menu>
3.Confirm your selection of " Daytime driving lights are deactivated"
Thank you for the information. I will make this my backup plan B.
Your post has been extremely helpful!!!!!
Kinda hijacking this thread for the opposite of what its original intention was. ;-)
Does anyone know how to ALSO enable the rear lamps when the front DRLs are on?
Here are a couple of links to sites explaining why DRLs suck, and how to disable them:
Association of Drivers Against Daytime Running Lights
Daytime Running Lights
"As far as energy savings go it will be around 5 bucks a year. I think I've seen somewhere before about disabling them but can't recall where."
How do they figure there's a savings of $5/yr? Maybe if is was an all electric car or hybrid you could come up with a quantify a savings caused by the need to recharge the batteries with an external source, but their power by the
alternator
that is putting the same drag on the engine if the DRLs are on or off. That's pretty weak reason to to switch off. This is more if you don't like the look or you think they are actually a safety problem.
Personally, I've seen enough people driving around in poor visibility with no lights on in cars that hard to see in those conditions. I think that trumps all other safety concerns of having DRLs. LEOs in SoCal do not like people driving around with just their parking lights on for several reasons.
I don't have to explain myself to you. Who do you think you are? The gatekeeper of the Daytime running lights option? If I wanted your opinion on the issue, I would have asked. I only asked how to disable them not asking for your permission so do so.
Bottom line is that in America were daytime running lights are not mandatory, according to the Porsche manual, there should be a menu to enable/disable them.
Its equally upsetting for people who want them who are unable to enable them because the menu is missing. Why is this menu missing? My guess is that Porsche is treating the entire north America region as they they are all abiding by Canada's law which is complete B.S.
In any event, I have them disabled permanently via the Porsche mechanic with computer interface. It did require a high level mechanic to figure it out but they are off. I have throw off the chains of oppression that are the nanny state of daytime running lights. (or in your case, gaytime running lights)
You can ride around all day with your high beams on if you like, but as long as there is no law mandating them, they are going off!
Next time someone ask a question, don't sit there demanding that they explain themselves to you as if you are the judge on if they are allowed to do it. You are not their mother or their nanny.
P.S. Your name would not happen to be Bloomberg would it? You want to tell me what size soda cup I can have too?
