Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

As the 996 3.6L uses a manifold designed for the 911 style engine bay, it is too tall to fit in the Boxster without fabricating lowering mounts for the engine.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just bought an '03 with no engine. Would prefer to go back with a 3.6, but have looked into the renegade LSx kit. But out of curiosity, has anyone ever heard of a 993 3.6 swap into a 996? Haven't done much searching on that yet but was just wondering if that is even viable.

As the 996 3.6L uses a manifold designed for the 911 style engine bay, it is too tall to fit in the Boxster without fabricating lowering mounts for the engine. You also need to pay attention to which type of VarioCam system the engine has as the DME has to match the system on the engine. This swap can be done, but you need to pay attention to the details to be successful.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sorry I wasn't more clear. I bought an 03 996 and was thinking out loud about the possibilities of putting a 993 3.6 in, but the more I thought about it that probably would not be possible. But you bring another question. What about a 997 3.6 engine into a 996?

Putting a 993 engine into a 996 body means adapting all of the air cooled stuff to work in the 996, which was never designed to be air cooled, is going to be a major undertaking. Putting a 997 engine into the 996 circumvents the air cooling issues, but the electronics are different, particularly the DME, so you would be trading one headache for another.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah, I figured as much. So it looks like I need to find a 996 3.6 or maybe a 3.4? or just say screw it and go with a LS3 swap..

A 3.6 out of a similar vintage 996 would probably be the easiest. Never been a fan of the LS swaps as they make the car a pariah at sales time.

POST 7Original post

Best end result would be same year engine rebuilt to 3.8L

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

i found a same year 3.6 for a good price, so all is good..
