Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

They also have better control over quality (there are probably a couple of other reasons also.)
Leading evidence: 'couple of other reasons also.)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'couple of other reasons also.)' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Recommend him' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

At some time we all need to be able to repair our engines rather than just replace them.

However, in following the posts here, in Renntech.org and other forums, it seems most owners have not had many alternatives when they have had major problems other than replacing the engines.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

There is a guy named Jeff who rebuilt mine and I took it back for a couple of small oil leaks and he fixed it without complaining.
We all know that Porsche limits the availability of parts for our engines and only offers their "remanufactured" engines. Today I found this link on Ebay for a rebuilt engine:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/99-01...spagenameZWDVW
Does anybody have any experience with this source? I'm wondering if we may soon have an alternative to OEM for engine problems.
I don't think I would want to buy one sight unseen. They are in Costa Mesa, CA. Maybe someone near there can find out who they are, etc. I just know it would be nice to have an alternative to OEM. At some time we all need to be able to repair our engines rather than just replace them.
Find someone local. Either that or someone with a national reputation. We have a few ere in Seattle that built great engines and stand behinde their work. I would use any of the tree without a second of hesitation. If I lived 1500 miles away???
Look at sponsors with your PCA region I am sure you will find someone.
I live very close to costa mesa...give me their address and I will check it out in the next few weeks...because like you said it's always good to have an alternative!!
THE LAST FACTORY REBUILT 996 ENGINE WITH E-GAS I SOLD WAS FOR $8,299 PLUS THE CORE AND SHIPPING I WOULD HAVE TO THINK TWICE ABOUNT PURCHASING ONE THAT WAS REBUILT IN-HOUSE
I shlould clarify that I am not in the market for a new engine. Just thought it might be interesting for 996 owners if alternatives to OEM remanufactured engines are strting to appear.
Parts to rebuild a 996 engine are readily available. For PAG/PCNA it is cheaper to have the engine rebuilt in Germany rather than pay the dealer warranty labor rate. They also have better control over quality (there are probably a couple of other reasons also.)
(long block prices are in US dollars and do not include core charges).
986 - $6963.57
996 - $7951.74
997 - $8561.44
993 - $18196.14
996TT - $20741.10 (short block)
GT3 - $26531.50
CGT - $79872.79
Apparently I am mistaken on the availability of parts for the 996 engines. I have never had to do any major work on mine in 6 years. However, in following the posts here, in Renntech.org and other forums, it seems most owners have not had many alternatives when they have had major problems other than replacing the engines.
The reman motor I purchased for my car was from this guy in Costa Mesa I would guess. Auto Strasse. There is a guy named Jeff who rebuilt mine and I took it back for a couple of small oil leaks and he fixed it without complaining. He is VERY knowledgable about the 996 motor and they buy tons of broken motors to piece good ones together. He showed me pieces from broken engines that were very interesting. Broken blocks (like mine), broken cranks, bent cams, etc. Anyway, if you did need a motor, I would recommend him.
Yes, Auto Strasse seems to be a great little company. I've dealt with the owner- Stephan (who is German) on several different occassions, and he is very intent on building a customer base through good customer service and relations. Their shop is very clean and the employee's seem to really know their stuff.
Once I jump on a car (looks to be this week!) I'll be taking it to Stephan for service.
