The combination of audio options is making my head spin. I'm looking to purchase a
987.2
and would like to have a USB port for listening to mp3s in the car and being able to control them from the stereo/steering wheel controls. I have no interest in the nav (
PCM
?) system but would consider it if it helps get me this functionality. Is there any usb port option available for the MY09-MY11 cars?
If USB is out, there's an 1/8" aux in option right? Sounds like I can go aftermarket and get a device that allows me to stream bluetooth audio via this connection, but no control of tracks from the stereo?
Do all of the stock headunits play MP3s via CD?
Thanks for any input.
Yes, my 2009 has a usb and
ipod
connection in the center console cubby. It works with my phone and
ipod
for music so my entire music library is at my fingertips. Not sure which option codes define this or if it is standard on every 2009 as my car has nav.
What is this thing called CD?
I can't imagine burning CDs to have some music in my car, I've been spoiled by having USB ports for many years. Thanks for the input, hopefully someone can chime in for the option(s) I need to narrow in on. Finding a car with the correct combo of options is going to be as easy as winning Powerball.
My 987.2S has the nav option; I never use the
GPS
, but I love the USB port in the cubby. I have a slim-line (1/8" nub) 64gb USB stick with, literally, my entire music library on it. The nav screen is fairly easy to use, but you can also access it on the dash with the stalk which is easier to use while driving than the touch screen. Seriously, touch-screens for cars suck ***- cars really need good ole fashioned buttons you don't need to look at to use!
There are some downsides. One is that it takes several minutes to catalog that large a library and it does it EVERY FRIGGEN TIME I START THE CAR! Which means you're stuck for a while with whatever is playing. There's an odd bug with mine that impacts both USB & CD and causes it to, occassionally, start at the first track, a random track, or whatever was playing the stop prior (vice the most recent time I turned it off.) It's mildly annoying when listening to music, but infuriating when trying to listen to podcasts and ebooks.
I burnt a CD with my favorite mp3 songs so that I can listen to podcasts on the USB stick on my morning commute (top up usually) and drop the top and listen to music on the way home. There's an input jack for ipods, too. A button on the nav unit toggles between them all.
Do they at least all have a line in?
This is great advice. If you don't want nav you can put a very nice sound system into any 987 for about $500-$800 that will be far more modern and user friendly than anything
Porsche
has to offer. Ignore the stock radio and drive the car.
