I only have used cds that I've burned myself in my Cayman.

Personally I use cheap media but burn it from iTunes at only 8x.

I have also used disks from different manufacturers.

[I've used MP3 discs in the 911's player, with upwards of 4 hours on a disc recorded at highest bitrate, 320 kbps, without a problem.

Suggestion
It does not matter whether you are using 74 minute or 80 minute, but make sure you burn at a slower than max burn speed (try keeping it under 24X, 16X-8X even better).

Also, while burning, do not use your computer, I know CD drives will have a buffer underrun protection that will give the burner a steady flow of data, but I notice a slight ticking noise when I would burn CD's and use my computer at the same time.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I got my 2008 Cayman S over a week ago and I noticed that when I am playing CDs it tends to skip alot to the point where I can't even listen to it. So I emailed my dealer and he put me in touch with the service guy had this to say:
"If they are burnt cds than it is normal for them to skip. The laser in the player has to spin faster and overheats trying to read the data causing the unit to skip, Porsche does not recommend non factory cds in its players."
I can't believe this! My old car was a Cadillac CTS and it never had any problems like this, and all I played was burned CDs.
I guess its time to invest in an ipod..

I always love hearing things people made up, suffice it to say that you simply need to burn a size and format that your CD player will recognize as it will play some home grown CDs, I just don't remember if it is CDR, CDRW, +/- whatever and which size and if there is a certain piece of software that has more success than others, but you can do it and it will work.
What I pasted was what the service man from Porsche told me, it would suck if hes making stuff up.
Anyway I'll try some different CD types/sizes etc, maybe I'll have better luck with a different brand.

I play burned CD's in my CS and the only time the CD will skip is driving over a very bumpy patch in the road. I never messed with the formatting sizes. I just burned it from itunes.
It does not matter whether you are using 74 minute or 80 minute, but make sure you burn at a slower than max burn speed (try keeping it under 24X, 16X-8X even better). If it still skips, you need better cd media, the more reflective it is the better the cd player will read it, try to get a dark blue/purple or gold bottom. Verbatim makes a quality product, ridata/tdk/maxell are good too.
Personally I use cheap media but burn it from iTunes at only 8x. If I burn at full speed, it almost always skips in both the Cayman and the Cayenne PCM.
I play a lot of burned cd's, usually cd-r and have not had any problems. I have also used disks from different manufacturers. Some have been recorded on my computer and others from a Pioneer cd burner that I have. No problems with either one.
Like everyone else above, no problems with playing burned CD's and no skips, (hope I'm not jinxing myself). Like you, I got my Cayman last week. The dealer needs to fix or replace that.
I've had no issues with burned CD's and burn as fast as my Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iMac, or PC at work want to burn them with no issues whatsoever. This is using various CD-R, but all are 80min.

Suneet is right, you have to burn it using a max speed of 24X, never go above that, I would even go with 8 or 16X.
Also, while burning, do not use your computer, I know CD drives will have a buffer underrun protection that will give the burner a steady flow of data, but I notice a slight ticking noise when I would burn CD's and use my computer at the same time. Just to let you know, I always use a quad core CPU with a 10K RPM HD and 4 GB of RAM, and I would still hear the ticking noise if I was working on the PC at the same time as burning a music disc.
Media type is important
Just be sure you are burning to CD-R (write ONCE) media for a start. Re-writable CD's (CD-RW or CD+RW) use a different (additional?) layer of dye in the substrate. And 80-min CD-RW/+RW might be pushing the player just far enough to cause the skips - clue would be if it happens more towards the end of the recording, since CD's play from the outside in.
[I've used MP3 discs in the 911's player, with upwards of 4 hours on a disc recorded at highest bitrate, 320 kbps, without a problem. But, as noted above, this requires the MP3 player that is part of the PCM. Shame you have to buy an expensive option to get just that. PCM's nav has saved us a time or two, though - already been worth it.]
So, CD-RW is no good for playing??
I burnt 6CDs into one 700MB CD-RW disk. The player doesn't even recognize it. Should I use CD-R, i.e., one CD to one CD-R? I thought I would enjoy continuous listening to several CDs... No luck!
If you were able to get 6 cd's into one, that means you either burnt the cd in wma or mp3 format;... in that case, you must have the PCM navigation in order to play it.
If you do have a PCM, then make sure you finalized the CD-RW to play in regular cd players. Once you do that, it shouldn't be an issue playing them in the PCM.
CD-R vs. CD=RW
Hi Suneet,
Thanks for the tip. I did it on a PC and must've done it in a format that cannot be recognized by a usual home music CD player (I found out last night). I can only play it on the PC. I'm not a technical wizard so, I'll try different ways.
