What is the easiest way to remove the cigarette lighter? I STFA and found it took some guy 10 hours, but I am hoping there is an easier way to pop it out without removing the whole face plate.

The first time it took me around 20 mins I pop it on and out is 30 seconds now. Once you have the horse shoe off, remone the green light tab, once thats off what you do is push the 2 metel keeper tabs inside the lighter slot.Once thats done you simply push the entire socket from rear to front.

Thanks. Well I got the face plate off and 30 minutes later after fiddling around to get the cigarette lighter out I find out - the new cigarette lighter does not fit. Same part, same part # but just incrementally bigger so it doesn't fit. That sucks @ss.

it shoudl fit, maybe its not lined up properly, it does have a key way I think??

Nope, it doesn't fit. The receptacle works fine, just the lighter was kaput so I ordered a new lighter and they sent me a whole new unit, lighter and receptacle. Well the new lighter was too big for the original receptacle, so I figured I would just swap it all out. It's not even close.

Mystery solved, Sunset sent me a lighter for the 2001 996 by mistake. They're sending me the correct part. No problemo.

Smackboy, that mod sure doesn't look like it would take 10 hours to complete, but then, I'm no mechanic... Just Kidding. Just bustin' your chops a little. Glad this worked out for you, or will when you get the correct part. Lot of very knowledgeable folks here with a wealth of information to share.
