Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Car Magazine Online posted pictures of 998 test mules along with an interior shot with the following commentary and picture: "Our spies have grabbed the first shots inside the 911. The main cabin architecture appears to be the same as today's car, but Porsche has tweaked the fiddly centre console and sat-nav system. Gone is the spray-on silver finish, replaced by a darker console with chrome highlights." This comes after Porsche officially announced a new touch-screen, hard drive based PCM for the Cayenne in June. It looks like it will in fact be available for the entire line-up. The climate control system layout is different as well. Article here: Porsche 911 | Secret New Cars | Car Magazine Online - Suneet

POST 2Original post

looks better IMO, but the darker color could be just like the PDE1 PCM ________________________ "Sir! We're surrounded!" - "Excellent! We can shoot in any direction!" A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!

POST 3Original post

That is not a 998 mule - it's a facelifted 997. New series 998 (some say it will be called 991) is not due for few more years...

POST 4Original post

The face-lifted 997 has long been referred to as the 998... though I would hardly call an update in power due to direct injection and a new auto- transmission just a facelift. I agree, as does the article, that the 991 will be the actual update sometime around 2011.

POST 5Original post

Well with that black electrical tape covering the crest on the steering wheel just how can we be sure of what it is? I'm sorry I just find that funny, as if covering that up is somehow going to hide the fact that this is a Porsche from anyone who knows anything about Porsches.

POST 6Original post

This looks a lot nicer, IMO. Does this look to be a touchscreen? They would be crazy not to, but the two rotating wheels on the left and right of the screen seem to mirror the same function as PCM 2.0. I sure hope this does not live up to the reputation of previous German electronics. Note to Porsche, PLEASE PROVIDE INTEGRATED BLUETOOTH AND IPOD CONTROLS WITH THIS PCM OPTION! Why didn't the photographer try to steal it? Is the PDK coming to the Cayman for '09? I would believe it would be on the Carrera for a year or so before coming to the Cayman, but anyone have concrete information on this?

POST 7Original post

Looks like a coin slot on the upper right of the unit (just under the CD slot). Possibly a flash memory card reader? Or you need Porsche tokens to use the Navigation system!

POST 8Original post

It could be the new location of the SIM card input. I have not heard of memory flash cards, but they have confirmed hard drive navigation and touchscreen in the Cayenne press statement. Touchscreen seems obvious with the design as there is no longer a keypad, and the old SIM card location was under the keypad and doesn't seem to be there anymore. The color change, while it looks nice, frustrates me because it eliminates the possibility of an easy, matching retrofit. This way, you'd have to replace the climate control, shelf, and button trim panel for the spoiler/PASM/Sport. Annoying... - Suneet

POST 9Original post

1. only some of the PDE1's have the black PCM, which is part of the "interior in black" set of options available to anyone, and not unique to PDE1. 2. my concern with the new look is that it appears to be plain-jane black plastic. at least that champagne silver PCM was unique! plain black plastic is boring.

POST 10Original post

I think the plastic will have a smooth finish, like the black plastic Becker uses for their Mercedes and BMW units. I think it is pretty classy in that now there are only two colors in the interior, not an odd third color (volcano gray) found only on the center console and nowhere else. Also having the third color being close in shade to the aluminum, the interior became more cluttered. One thing I'm nervous about is the chrome accents being used; they should have used alumalook to match the other interior parts done in aluminum. - Suneet

POST 11Original post

I was told that they covered the emblem because they were very embarrassed to be seen driving a Porsche now that the GT-R is out.

POST 12Original post

The best solution to the busy nature of the PCM Face is to go touch-screen, eliminating more than half the buttons. Hope they finally do it for '09.

POST 13Original post

Sorry, Nitro8472, I couldn't help myself. You know I was only being sarcastic. I'll be a Porsche guy till the day I die!

POST 14Original post

Yeah I do, dun think u'd be here if u didnt  ________________________ "Sir! We're surrounded!" - "Excellent! We can shoot in any direction!" A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!

POST 15Original post

I drove a new 997S today and my salesman mentioned that in 2 weeks he'll have the details on the new 2009 (pick your nomenclature, 998 or facelifted 997). He said that they expect it to come with the new tranny, an updated engine (although he didn't know if it was direct injected or not) with new Nav system, and of course the obligatory facelift to the exterior. Looking around the web, I'm surprised I cannot find ANY details on this, when the dealers will be taking orders for them in 2-3 weeks (according to my sales guy he is in the dark outside the show-room gossip)... Paul

POST 16Original post

from what I see, Porsche likes to keep everyone in the dark (including their dealerships) and then release a surprise ________________________ "Sir! We're surrounded!" - "Excellent! We can shoot in any direction!" A good car will get you from point A to point B. A great car... will just get you into trouble!

POST 18Original post

According to the PDF posted in the 09 Cayman thread, it's a touchscreen, and it can directly control iPods and play music off USB sticks. Finally! I wonder if it's retrofitable to previous Porsches. The Nav is based on a 40GB hard drive. --Andre

POST 19Original post

and its going in all Caymans ordered from now - just confirmed it with my dealer for my new car

POST 20Original post

Even if you can retrofit it, it wouldn't match the other components in volcano gray. You'd have to replace the shelf, option panel, and climate control system to get a perfect match. Those parts will add about $1,200 in addition to the cost of the PCM. The only factor making it difficult to retrofit is what appears to be a slight power revamp in the Bose system, which is up to 385 watts (current is rated at 300) and supports discrete 5.1 surround sound. But since they're still using MOST bus, I doubt the signal has changed and retrofitting shouldn't be an issue. I'm sure we will see sooner or later... maybe if PCNA wants to lend me a unit during Croctoberfest?

POST 21Original post

Looking at the new 911 article it looks like the PCM has an SD memory card slot. That would be nice...along with the vented seats option! Looks like the memory buttons for the seats has been moved from the door location. Probably back to the trunk button area. DanM
