According to the TSB: "After updating the PCM2.1 integrated system to Model Level B software, only the new navi-gation DVDs can be used." So you will need a new navigation disk that is "labeled 08.2007 or higher."

I'm guessing if the repair kit isn't successfully done, then the model level B update isn't done either because it came out after the repair kit (though only by 2 weeks) in February 2006.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi,
Has anyone come across this particular issue and know what it is, I have checked the nav dvd and it appears to be the correct one....
All functions appear to work but this unusual startup screen appears. I have attached a picture so you can see what I am talking about.
Any advice gratefully received.
Thanks
Rob
Did you recently take your car in to get it serviced by the dealer?
There is a TSB that affects 540 2005 Boxsters where the cd drive doesn't properly function to play mp3's, wma's or burned cd's and the fix for it is a software update specifically called: "
PCM
2.1 Repair Kit CD-ROM."
At the bottom of the TSB it says:
"After the update is completed, the
PCM
will turn off and then on again automatically. If it doesn't turn on automatically, switch it on using the left rotary knob,
Do not take the Repair Kit CDROM out of the CD slot.
When the PCM2.1 is switched on, the message "Repair Kit Single CD" appears underneath the Porsche logo on the start screen.
Well, as the TSB continues you realize this is only stage 1 of the update process. Your tech removed the cd, and did not complete stage 2 stage 3 of the update and your PCM is asking for the disk so that the update can finish. Take it back into the dealer and have them complete the process.
It is workshop campaign W610.
Hi Suneet,
Thanks again for the help with this one, I am getting the latest update cd's... is my best approach to just start over with the update or still take it back to the dealer ?.... I wonder if this also explains why when I looked at the sw versions only the NAV appears current with a tick, the rest have warning triangles
next
to them.
Thanks again
Rob
I guess that depends on a few things... how far away is your dealer, is your car still under warranty, if not will your dealer fix their mistake for free.
It also depends on exactly which software level the
PCM
is currently at, because the updates are not cumulative. None of the other updates have that "repair kit" message if they fail. The latest update came up December 2007, is that the one you're getting? If so then the
PCM
must already be updated up to model level B.
Standard version: 04035xxx
Model Level A: 04202xxx
Model Level B: 05024xxx
Model Level C: 05395xxx
I'm guessing if the repair kit isn't successfully done, then the model level B update isn't done either because it came out after the repair kit (though only by 2 weeks) in February 2006. Thus you might have to get ahold of the repair kit first, and then update to model level B and then do the latest navigation update.
From the latest nav update TSB:
"The navigation update for model year (MY) 08 comprises the two PCM2.1 Multimedia Update
911
Boxster
Cayman
CDs 1 and 2, the PCM2.1 Multimedia Update CD Navigation and the DVD containing
maps.
To use the navigation DVD (labelled 08.2007 or higher), which is valid as of Model Level B, in equipment
configured with Model Level A software, a software update of the PCM2.1 integrated system must be
performed using the update CD "PCM2.1 Update CD Model Level B" (software version 05024xxx).
In the case of PCM2.1 systems with the standard software version (04035xx), the Model Level A software
version (04202xxx) must first be installed..
If the PCM2.1 is configured with sofware version C/C1, only the maps need to be updated."
Hi Suneet, not sure if it helps but here are the current sw versions :
PCM
: 05473AD1 / 4705
SYS : 04514BD1 / 5104
AMP : 00017500 / 3504
CGR : C38 / 3003
NAV : 00174412 / 4804
TEL : 05034B54 / 0305
Thanks
Rob
If you're getting the updates anyways give it a shot; if it doesn't work, then call the dealer. I personally think you will need the actual update they were working on completed before it will take any more updates... but you never know. The
PCM
software version your unit is reporting seems updated.
According to W610, the workshop campaign for the single-cd repair kit:
the three stages are as follows:
1) Update to version repair, involves installing test software that checks the audio cd drive for errors. (this is where your
PCM
is stuck)
2) Firmware update (Automatically performed if cd drive is found to have errors)
3) Software update to version R02 Plus.
As far as whether the update cd's you're getting will be able to satisfy the requirement for the following updates, I don't know... Perhaps they will just clear the boot ROM and the error will go away. The reason for this single-cd repair kit was because early
PCM
's did not properly play mp3's and wma's.
Hi Suneet,
Thanks very much for your help... I'll contact the dealer and order this CD I think. As for the others, they are :
PCM
2.1 Multimedia update CD 1 Part: 000 043 205 46 002 - 08.2007
PCM
2.1 Multimedia update CD 2 Part: 000 043 205 46 003 - 08.2007
PCM
2.1 Multemedia Update CD Navigation MY08 Part: 000 044 901 40 - 08.2007
Are these going to be the appropriate cd's to update my
PCM
et al after the repair-kit cd-rom has finished ?
Do you know if my current NAV DVD (2005) will work post these updates, I am quite happy to go out and get one as my area has changed a lot recently and therefore this disk is not anywhere near accurate but it would be useful to know so that I don't have any surprises after the updates are done!
Thanks
Rob
000 043 205 46 002 is the Mode Level B Update, 000 043 205 46 003 is a phone system update, only for those with
Motorola
phones, 000 044 901 40 is the PCM2.1 Multimedia Update CD that goes into the Navigation module.
According to the TSB: "After updating the PCM2.1 integrated system to Model Level B software, only the new navi-gation DVDs can be used." So you will need a new navigation disk that is "labeled 08.2007 or higher."
- Suneet
Suneet, I think you will find the 2 Update Cd's are designed for the level A software
PCM
's to be updated to level B , this allows the 2005 or later map DVD's to be loaded. The Repair CD is designed for the level B units to update them to level B+ which is software version 3.3. The update does not take the
PCM
to level C , this also seems to be reserved for certain hardware models. The repair kit Cd software update addresses issues with the MP3 function found on later units so its not applicable for early
PCM
's. If the
PCM
is originally at level B I do not think it requires the two update CD's as the software is already above the update on the Cd's.
Porsche
package all 3 Cd's in the kit , since they do not know what
PCM
level software is originally in the customer's car. I have updated my own vehicle using the 2 update Cd's mentioned. Once updated , it does not allow update to level B+ (using the reapir kit CD) since the unit does not have the same hardware as those originally supplied with level B. The map/ navigation software level on ROBC 's car is correct for an updated
PCM
as it is a 2005 map release.
Berty987, I see what you're saying; I noticed his software levels were higher than the TSB's and mentioned it above in one of the posts.
The key to his original question about the repair kit error will still involve getting that original cd back in and completing the update, as his
PCM
is stuck mid-update. I find it strange that the repair kit update (W610) is dated a year before the multi-cd update but is an older version of software... but you're right, the software version on OP's
PCM
is newer than what is stated in the TSB.
Guys,
Thanks for all your efforts on this, I finally had a chance to talk to the service dept at my local opc and they are happy to take it back in and redo the W610 recall work to make sure the unit is updated correctly.
I'll book it in and let you know the outcome.
Thanks again
Rob
