I totally changed my position on so called A40 Oil Recommendations by Porsche and the M96 engine.

My 92k 1999 ran Mobil1 15W50 it's entire life until the last change when I used Driven XP9 (10W40), since I primarily track it now.

I too used the dealer recommended oil until getting the results back.

After reading the diatribes about which brand and what weight oil for the 99 Carrera, I called my mechanic who told me 0-40 Total oil is what they use, but the repair invoices that the customer gets including me say Mobil One, I had enough.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I also told her that it will make no difference when I buy her macan.

I placed a call to Porsche North America for the correct answer, which I already knew, just wanted some credible confirmation.
The correct oil is sold by dealers, and others, called Porsche Classic Oil, 5W-50 for the climate I am in here in Riverside.
Tell your friends, not your enemies. I have no further comment.

Thanks and welcome. I would recommend that after using this (or whatever) oil, you have a few oil analyses performed. You can then use the results to further your education of oil properties and the truly best oil for your application. I too used the dealer recommended oil until getting the results back.
I totally changed my position on so called A40 Oil Recommendations by Porsche and the M96 engine. I no longer bow to the holy sticker under the deck lid!
You all know I found a secret source for my rides special fluids.
A40 is a minimum standard and my source far exceeds these low marks.
As soon as the patent is issued I am told that the "developer" will make this public.
Until then you have to know a guy that knows a guy with the secret handshake to get in the club.Sorry, I cant reveal the source.
Until then, use the most expensive fluids you can afford.
I'm also on some Landcruiser forums, and what I love is that oil is never a topic.
For those who like the diametric opposite, there is bobistheoilguy, com
Run whatever oil makes you happy.
Peace, out.
I buy my Mobil 1 0W-40 in five quart containers from Wal-Mart. Dump two of those in at oil change and good to go. At 144K miles, must be doing something right. Engine is strong and healthy. Did I mention I hate oil threads? Use whatever trips your trigger....
That's what I've been using (my first year of ownership) and am ready for my second oil change. I will send both oil samples in and take action from there.
Don't get afraid. Probably we will get to burn on the hell of the Jake's fanboys (been said that I dont know Jake and I respect him as I respect any other mechanic/engineer)... but yes, Mobil1 is also a good oil for these cars
I would recommend you to buy the "European Formula" though.

Well, I was a bit short. I do get the European Formula, change my oil twice a year, put a new M1-107 oil filter on my LN Spin On Oil Filter adapter, clean my LN magnetic drain plug, snug everything up and it is good. At 144K miles and twenty year old car, I have no complaints from the engine whatsoever. Have I done a lot of other maintenance items....sure. The point I'm trying to make is there is no magically unicorn oil for a Porsche. Yeah...formulated in the Black Forest outside Stuttgart by magical elves living in hollowed out trees. Only available from your local Porsche dealer for $$$$$$$$$. Point: Follow standard maintenance procedures, change your oil and filter frequently, and enjoy the drive.
Dont put diesel class 8 truck oil in your car engine.... I know lots of people do it but that stuff is designed for big diesels that never see 3,000 rpm. Come on man...... You gonna put diesel in the fuel tank and add a DEF tank next?
The same thing that Raby has used for years before he helped to create the DT-40, Motul 8100 Xcess 5w-40 is some of the very best oil you can buy for a 5w-40 application. It s a true 100% synthetic instead of the "full" synthetic game that other manufacturers play
And far cheaper than DT-40 if you order it via Amazon in a 4 - 5 liter jug case.
No. DEF is exhaust fluid. I add it to the cats during oil change. Saving the last half quart for the mufflers.
Other than the label, curious why this is diesel oil?
I know DEF is fluid thats why I asked if you are going to add a DEF tank next. Read the label and literature on Rotella. It was designed for class 8 trucks. People started sticking it in their cars, usually the same types that swear by Slick 50 and Lucas additives too.
Hahahaha gold!
The dealership will be draining my 6 month Mobil1 0W40 change I did for their 5W50 classic in October.
I wonder who makes it, Mobil make a commercially available 5W50 as well - it's more expensive than their 0W40 (for me down under YRMV).
I had heard oil thread trolls lived under Mobil 1 Bridge, right after Oil Filter Bypass at the 5-50/0-40 junction. Now it’s confirmed. By my Porsche dealer Service Manager. When I had my Cayenne in for 2 recall repairs. Where they also sell...oil additives! Expensive oil additives! Thankfully, Porsche isn’t in it for the $billions$; they’re in it for the purity of our ‘driving experience’.
I do the 6 monthly changes - I get the yearly maintenance done at the dealership to keep the maintenance records up to date.
Could easily do it all myself but I want good service records.
I do that as well and keep the receipts of the oil and filters etc.
Maybe an Australian thing? We like seeing dealership stamps when buying a car to know its been loved so I just like to keep the book up to date.
One of my colleagues drives a Macan. Dealer wanted $1000 for her second oil change and whatever the maintenance was. I sent her to a very reputable independent. Cost was $400.
She also had concerns about not going to the dealer. I told her that anyone that knows Porsches would prefer that particular Indy. I also told her that it will make no difference when I buy her macan. Lol
I've had bad experience with independents here and the dealership actually offers a flat minor/major service rate as well. Aside from the annual service I try and do as much as I can myself.
I wouldn't go to them for a half yearly oil change I do that myself as mentioned.
Like your plan. Bet your exhaust smells wonderfully. I think I am gonna try my own mix. Maple syrup for my baby and swap the helix with t6. Then patent the mix.
What's more important is how often you change it. My 92k 1999 ran Mobil1 15W50 it's entire life until the last change when I used Driven XP9 (10W40), since I primarily track it now. The original 21+ year old (March 1998 build) engine is doing just fine. Note that it has lived its entire life in upstate SC where the temperature is often warm to hot.
I like oil threads, you can learn a lot about the
people
who are responding by reading their discussion and reason for using a particular brand/weight or not.
Any you guys running Kendal GT1? Used to be the standard issue for the old aircooled cars. Seems to be a lot of versions of the GT1 out there. Even a new GT1 Euro 5W40 formula for us Porsche owners.
Next, I'm going to hear my choice is no good...
But hey - what it lacks in quality is more than made up for by my own special blend of additives.
Half Z-Max, half STP and the third half is Slick 50.
