Turned out to be the belt on the power steering pump slipping, the OPC did something cant remember what, at the last service which seems to have fixed the issue.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

2 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi all, a newbie here. I purchased a 996 turbo about 6 weeks ago and have a wee query which I'm trying to shed some light on. The issue I have is that I have noticed that when sharp cornering (a round-about or turning sharply out of a side street) and have the car under load (reasonable acceleration) a vibration type noise occurs. It doesn't occur under normal cornering even when loading the car or likewise when taking a sharp corner while not under load. It definately gives me the impression something is rubbing, I have checked the front wheel arch plastics and found nothing. It will do it both turning left or right and sounds very similar to when you run over rumbled strips and is really more noticable as a sound with pretty much no real noticable vibration. It has been suggest the gearbox mount might be worn and as a result there may be a slight movement in the drive train under tight cornering load. So anyway I just thought I'd ask if anybody has experianced this or got any thoughts. Cheers Kiwi

POST 2Original post

Hello & welcome to the forum. By any chance are you Kiwi off the S2Ki forum with the lovely White S2000? To answer your question on the issue you have I'd agree a drive-train problem caused by a worn mounting but then it is guess work without listening to it myself. Where are you in the UK? Lloyd

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Lloyd, I'm on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand and the only Honda I've ever owned was a Prelude years ago. Due to my location my closest OPC is 300km away, so although I'm not overly fussed that I need to get it sorted I just didn't want to get down to the dealership only to have them tell me that the part will be a week away and come back then I know with all these such things it's very difficult to explain correctly so others can understand... but I'll try and clarify it a little more... Assume I'm on a round-about, not one of those big motorway ones, but one that they've managed to squeeze into an existing residential intersection because some roading boffen at some stage has decided that not only will it fit but it's more effecient. Okay so we enter the round-about and for the purpose of this it is irrelevant if you go clickwise or anticlockwise around it as it happens either way. I can be going around the round-about under no load, ie no acceleration and not a sound, as I accelerate more at a certain point of throttle/acceleration the noise starts. Straighten up or back-off the throttle it dissapears. The noise doesn't seen to make the car vibrate almost like deep non metalic knocking sound resonating at around maybe 5 or so cycles per second. I'm pretty sure it's not a bearing, otherwise the noise would most likely be there all the time. As I said I'm not to fussed that it needs a little work, it was really just a case of ensuring we tackle the right thing and I can get it done in one trip, or hopefully if it's a relatively easy fix one of the European dealerships local to me might be able to do it with guidance from the OPC. Cheers

POST 4Original post

It might be a tad obvious, but could it be the PSM kicking in? That sounds like a hammering sound at about 5 cycles a second.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Richard, thanks for that. I'm a little unsure if it's that but it's woth a try. What's the best way to test, find a quiet carpark, turn off the PSM and test... I'm a bit worried it might be addictive thoe without the PSM To be honest my first impression was it gave me the same feeling as my 993 used to when reversing and you'd get it crabbing...

POST 6Original post

The PSM light should flash if it is kicking in, although under the circumstances you describe you might not notice it.

POST 7Original post

I had a similar rubbing sound from the rear but only on full lock, the only time I had it was when coming out of my drive onto the street. Turned out to be the belt on the power steering pump slipping, the OPC did something cant remember what, at the last service which seems to have fixed the issue.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay just out in the car at the moment, it's definately not the PSM as the light doesn't come on, and it also does it with it off. It's just a very low frequency vibration. Infact I can feel it through the floor pan when it occurs and from what I can gather it does seem to get more pronounced the harder I push it... so definiately think something somewhere is rubbing...

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Just a quick update. I took the car to the local Audi dealer on advice from the Porsche dealership (300km away) so they could see if they could identify the vibration. On inspection it looks to be a worn gearbox mount. So one is on order and I should have it fitted in a couple of weeks. Will post on here once it's done just to hopeful confirm problem solved. Kiwi

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Okay just an update. Fitted the new gearbox mount today. The problem is all resolved, including a minor whine that was constantly there under acceleration. Kiwi

POST 11Original post

Thanks for the update... Always useful to have fixes on here in case anyone else gets the same symptoms  Glad it's all fixed!
