I'm specifically curiou about checking for over-rev indications.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

First off - thanks to all that chimed in with ideas on how to get keys to a vehichle that comes with none.
Next question - is it possible to check codes on a car that the door can be opened, but does not have any keys? I'm specifically curiou about checking for over-rev indications. My fear is that since the car was stolen, the thieves went nuts with it and exceeded red limits for fun. Any ideas?
Nope, you don't need the key in the ignition to do basic tests and check for any stored codes. However, if you want to conduct a more thorough running test like cam dev or fuel trim, then of course, you'll need to start the car.
I beg to differ on this one. I understand the door is open, meaning it was never locked to begin with. But you can not read any information stored in the ECU/DME without turning the
ignition switch
to ON. Put simply, the ECU/DME is not powered up to be able to look at codes or over revs without having power. Since you have no keys that work the
ignition switch
, the immobilizer will "think" the car is being stolen and will lock everything down. You are in a tough spot with no keys. You can get the laser cut key from Porsche with Title and VIN. But that will only allow you to lock and unlock the door. The passive RFID pill in the key head is programmed to the immobilizer, and that tells the ECU/DME this is the correct key. The RFID pill is read by the
ignition switch
key surround and must match exactly the code stored in the immobilizer (security system) in order to power up the ECU/DME. There frankly is no other method for security purposes.
Steps to take:
1) Order new laser cut keys (the metal blade part of the key) from Stuttgart Porsche with Title and VIN. A local Porsche dealer can do that for you. Then at least you don't have to replace all the key cylinders (door, glove box, ignition switch, center console).
2) Order new key heads with RIFD pill AND key code tags attached.
3) Deliver the whole bundle with car to a Porsche dealer for programming the car to the keys. Only a Porsche dealer with PIWIS can do this to program the new keys to the immobilizer, and the immobilizer to the ECU/DME. It is my understanding you only get 5 shots at this with the immobilizer, and then it is toast. So if the previous owner had two keys and a valet key, you can only program two new key codes to the immobilizer.
I think over-revs are the least part of your worries right now. You already have the car, now you are going to have to figure out how to run it.
Going nuts on these cars is fine. Just watch some PCA Club racing videos. I saw one video where the driver only shifted at the rev limiter. Smh
Your main concern when it comes to over revs is if they money shifted it (top of one gear, and then shifting into a lower gear...like going 100 in 3rd and then shifting to 2nd).
It doesnt hurt to check, but more than likely you should be fine.
+996 PIWIS2 won't do a VAL (Vehicle Activity Log) or read DME values (like over-rev activity) without the key in the accessory position.
If you're worried about over-revs and the price isn't reflecting an absolute bargain IMO perhaps you should walk away from this one?
There are a lot of unknowns of a stolen recovered vehicle as you've mentioned - did they go nuts? Did they smash into curbs, fly over crests, scrape the sump, overrev the heck out of it - who knows what they got up to in it...
Guess its your call but i'd say given the risks i'd only proceed if the price is reflective of what this car could be.
I'm sure someone with the time a patience could find a relay to jump that would at least energize the DME. Wouldn't be able to do anymore than run codes......and maybe **** off some security features at the same time which would set additional codes.
A laser cut key, without the pill, will be able to power up the DME.
I use a non-pill key whenever I want to use my Durametric or Snap-on without starting the car. (When oil is dripping into my pan)
I can read to make sure there are no over-revs, and to see when I last hit the rev limiter.
Hi Bill -
It's a bit early in the process. Once it gets closer to being released I'll get some pics. Not sure of the price yet either, that's why I'm doing my research in advance - so I can move quickly to make an educated offer.
