Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My 996 failed it's MOT yesterday, the brake lights come on but flicker and go back off, the station thought it might be a switch on the pedal, anyone else had this?, Lee

POST 2Original post

Most likely the switch itself or it is out of adjustment. You could try re-adjusting it. Unclip the switch from the bracket by twisting it 1/4 turn, then pull out the plunger as far as it will go, and re-fit the switch. On the subject of MOT failures, VOSA recently released MOT results for all cars tested in 2007. I extracted the 911 figures for 1997-2005, which makes interesting reading. Hopefully this link works:

I meant the link to the table embedded in the post. Sorry it's a bit small to read, but you can right-click the image and choose "Save Picture As.." to save it on your computer and then open it full size.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes interesting, 2002 have highest failure rate (mine), within that the most common reason is lighting and signalling (mine again), thanks, Lee

POST 6Original post

Hi Lee, I had this on my '99 C2 and was a failed switch. They are fairly cheap to replace and, as long as you are happy contortnig yourself under the steering column for access, a fairly straightforward DIY. You'll probably have to unclip a bit of aircon ducting but once you have access they do just pop out with a quarter turn as Richard says. I tried readjusting mine but to no avail, the light would come on about a quarter of the way through a press on the brake pedal but would cut out with more pressure, so you could show your brake lights to following cars with a gentle press on the brakes but would lose the light when full braking pressure was applied.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
