Also, Alcantara is much easier to clean than real suade, it resists the effects of the sun better, and does not stain easily.

If I want to replace my current triangular standard wheel with a thicker wheel what is it going to cost me?

I should get a test drive in the GT3 RS just to yank my own chain I suppose

When I ordered the material from Italy I was told that I needed to specify how the material would be used and asked me where it would be used (dashboard?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I wish this was an affordable option on the Cayman S - it is perfect.
I'm assuming that it is a either not available or hugely expensive.
I shall find out tomorrow when I order my Cayman S
You can always order it separately and get it installed. However, it will cost you.

It's ridiculous how much Porsche charges for their items. BMW's thick, M-sport, leather wrapped, deviated stitching, multifunction (radio/cruise control/phone) steering wheel for the 3-series is ~$300. The alcantara version is approximately $400.
Thanks for the info.
Would I be correct in thinking that it is simply the thicker wheel clad in Alcantara? If so, I'll get that done bespoke here for a fraction of the price.
I called Suncoast a couple of days ago, about getting a GT3 wheel (the smooth leather version, not the alcantara). Even though they offered me a screaming deal (about $700 off the total MSRP of wheel and airbag), it was still $$$$ and more than I can afford right now.
If anyone is interested, send me a PM and I'll send you the part #s and POC at Suncoast.
I have one of these wheels arriving tomorrow from Suncoast. Paid $470 for it. What are they asking for them now?
(err, the one I have coming is the alcantara GT3 RS wheel. skimmed the earlier posts a little too blithely.)
WOW, what a rip-off that ebay link is, (not surprising). Go to Carnewal.com, and buy it, for oh say, $1,000 less! Gert is a great guy, and delivery is quick regardless of the fact it comes from Europe.
$470 is for the rim only I believe; the airbag is another at least $500; unless you already have the round center and don't mind that the round part is black leather and the rim is gray alcantra.
If you get the rim and the airbag for $470, then it's an awesome deal.
That's right. It takes the sport wheel airbag module, which is only $250SRP if ordered with the car. As soon as I saw the actual prices for the Techart wheels ($1350 in exchange for an OEM wheel) I decided I could live with the GT3 RS wheel
Would it match with Sand Beige interior??
I love the alcantara (wheel, shifter and e-brake) but I'm not confident that it would match well with a sand beige interior. Any thoughts or recommendations?
GT3 RS manual interface first impressions
Here are my first impressions of the GT3 RS manual interface.
First off, this stuff is distinctly racey,
not
luxury. That's what I'm looking for. Not for everyone.
Steering wheel dimensions (caliper measurements where applicable):
Radial diameter below thumb rests: 1.25"
Radial diameter above thumb rests (i.e. apex): 1.13"
Depth-wise diameter: 1.25" on top of backside knurls, 1.19" in the furrows.
Lateral diameter at thumb rests: 1.56"
Overall diameter: 14.6" (circular)
I believe these are the same dimensions as the standard sport wheel, and not as thick as the "thicker" wheels (particularly, XPA).
If one had any doubts about the race breeding of the pieces, the yellow alcantara strip at the apex of the wheel will dispel them. It's a half inch wide, runs the full circumference, and is in fact a separate piece of alcantara fabric glued in place, though sewn along the inner seam along with the black alcantara of the rest of the wheel.
The color is black, though black alcantara looks more charcoalish verging on dark gray depending on how the light hits it. It will go well with my planned stone grey interior, but would be a stretch with beige. For the terracotta crowd, it would look way cool I think.
The part numbers are:
wheel: 997-347-804-92-A15, wholesale $470.75
shifter: 997-424-075-90-A15, wholesale $130.53
e-brake: 997-424-031-90-A15, wholesale $331.36
Wholesale total is $932.64, so $760 shipped was obviously a blow-out. It's fairly clear to me that PAG had a contractor production overrun on these, and that Suncoast is having a particularly hard time dumping the handbrake levers (which come as a fairly elaborate mechanical assembly).
The alcantara is obviously a superior interface surface for race applications. As to wear patterns, we'll just have to see.
I won't have reports on performance until some time in 2H2008 when I plan to take delivery of the car. In the meantime I'll try to shield CC from the existential angst of my tragically Caymanless condition.
Oh no no no, I'm in your boat presently too! CS is in my price range. GT3 RS is in someone else's price range. I'm just retrofitting the GT3 RS furniture to my CS, which I also don't have yet.
I should get a test drive in the GT3 RS just to yank my own chain I suppose
This is probably my biggest disappointment with my CS. I have gotten used to a thicker steering wheel with my last 2 Audi S4's. The CS steering wheel seems so skinny. I have checked out a few of the threads and sponsors but there seems to be a lot of contradictory info. If I want to replace my current triangular standard wheel with a thicker wheel what is it going to cost me? It seems that I won't be able to use my airbag with most of the aftermarkets. Does anyone take an old wheel in trade? What is the best option?
OK, that is a nice steering wheel, but how is it any different from the thicker CS sport wheel? I am sure this is a dumb question, but go ahead and let me have it.....
Russ
Techart charges you an additional $600 for their wheel and refund it to you when you send in your original wheel. Their wheels are modified OEM wheels that take the OEM airbag. You might want to look into whether you need a sports or normal steering wheel though as they use different airbags.
About Alcantara and how it may wear; Keep in mind that Alcantara is not a natural product. It is man made and as such it can be formulated for different applications. I re-upholsterd the interior in a previous car with Alcantara. When I ordered the material from Italy I was told that I needed to specify how the material would be used and asked me where it would be used (dashboard? seating area? headliner?). The factory makes Alcantara for all types of application including sofas and clothing. Also, Alcantara is much easier to clean than real suade, it resists the effects of the sun better, and does not stain easily. I hope that Porsche chose the correct formula for the steering wheel.
Daytona.
